2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held at Istanbul; Turkey Tops Medal Tally

IBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2022

The 12th edition of 2022 International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championship(WWBC) was held at Başakşehir Youth and Sports Facility, Istanbul, Turkey from May 8 to May 20, 2022.

  • The event saw the participation of 310 Boxers from 73 nations.

Prize Reward:

The Medal winners were awarded with overall prize money of United States Dollar(USD) 2.4 million.

  • Gold medallists won USD 100,000
  • Silver medallists won USD 50,000
  • Bronze medallists won USD 25,000

Key points:

i.India for the first time in the past four years, had won a total medal tally of 3, which includes one Gold and two Bronze.

ii.The India Boxer Nikhat Zareen( from Nizamabad, Telangana) won the gold in flyweight (52kg) division with 5-0 points against Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas. With this win she became the fifth Indian women boxer to win the World Championship.

iii.Other Four Indian boxers who have won the world title for India are – Six-time champion Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006) and Lekha KC (2006)

iv.Zareen is also the first Indian woman boxer to claim two gold medals at the prestigious 73rd Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament 2022 held at Sofia, Bulgaria.

v.The other two Indian women boxers Manisha Moun (from Haryana) and Parveen Hooda(from Haryana) had won the bronze medals in 57kg and 63kg categories respectively.

Note:

i.In the 2022 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships the weight categories were extended from 10 to 12.

ii.Algeria, Kosovo, Lithuania, Mozambique, Spain and Uzbekistan won their first medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022.

iii.Belarusian and Russian boxers were not allowed to compete at the event after a ban as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
