World Rivers Day 2021

World Rivers Day is annually observed across the globe on the fourth Sunday of September to create awareness about water bodies and to promote the conservation of water bodies across the globe.

World Rivers Day 2021 was observed on 26th September 2021. 

  • World Rivers Day 2020 was observed on 27th September 2020
  • World Rivers Day 2022 will be observed on 25th September 2022.

Background:

i.The first ever World Rivers Day was observed in 2005 following the launch of the United Nations(UN)s International Decade for Action ‘Water for Life’ 2005-2015.

ii.The idea of World Rivers Day was proposed by Mark Angelo, a renowned Canadian river advocate.

iii.Mark Angelo founded and led the observance of British Columbia(BC) Rivers Day, the largest River appreciation event in Canada, since 1980.

About Mark Angelo:

i.Mark Angelo, from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, is the founder and chair of both BC Rivers Day and World Rivers Day.

ii.He is also the Chair Emeritus of the Rivers Institute at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and the head of BCIT’s Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program.

iii.He has been honoured with both the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada (Canada’s highest honour) in recognition of his river conservation efforts over 40 years.
