Today we are celebrating 10th World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).It was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

The theme this year is “Falling Between the Cracks: Abuse and Violence against Older Women Marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – 10 years on”.

The purpose of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is to provide raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. The abusers do not remember that they are going to become elder one day and the same thing applied to them.

  • For every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported. The survey of 1,200 people, over sixty years of age, with equal number of men and women, reveals that 52 per cent of the women say they have been abused, as opposed to 48 per cent of the men.
  • The main reason for abuse has been emotional and economic dependence on the abuser, say the surveyed, 77 per cent of who live with their families.
  • The top perpetrators of abuse are the daughter-in-law (61%), and son (59%).Estimation indicate that by 2050, the global population of people above the age of 60 will exceed the number of younger people.
  • Younger generation should take the responsibility to change this abuse against elders
