Background
World Day of War Orphans was initiated by France based SOS Enfants En Détresse (SOSEED), a sponsorship program for orphans.
UNICEF’s Definition of Orphan
As per the United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF), orphan is defined as a child under 18 years of age who lost one or both parents to any cause of death.
Statistics & Estimates Regarding Orphans:
i.As per UNICEF estimates, the number of orphans in developed countries are relatively less. But in places that are subjected to wars and great epidemics, the numbers are notably higher.
ii.There are more than 250 million children living in countries affected by conflict.
iii.1 in 4 of the world’s children live in a conflict or disaster zone.
iv.There are 153 million orphaned children around the world.
v.In 2015, there were about 140 million orphans globally.
vi.As per the study by SOS Children’s Villages, there are more than 2 crore orphans in India.
