Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby) Heads Toward Philippines

Typhoon Hagupit (Named Ruby in the Philippines) is gaining strength over the western Pacific and has the capability to bring damaging winds and flooding to the Philippines by the weekend. It is expected to hit the land on saturday, currently classified as category 5 storm according to reuters.

According to today Dec 4, 2014 local weather bureau, typhoon Hagupit (Ruby) was moving across the Pacific at around 720 km(450 miles) southeast of the island. It has the potential of winds from 205 kph (130 mph) near the centre to 240 kph.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has classified Hagupit as a “violent” storm while the U.S. navy named it a super typhoon.

The Philippines government said it was considering to declare a state of national calamity inorder to freeze prices of basic goods. President Benigno Aquino has commanded the trade department to send more food supplies to the  provinces which are at risk from typhoon. People already living temporary shelters due to the effect of Typhoon Haiyan had been told to be evacuated.

Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Yolanda in the Philippines, was the most powerful typhoon ever recorded over land. It ripped though the central Philippines in November 2013, with casualities of more than 7,000 dead or missing.
