Two Indians win Whitley Awards for wildlife conservation

At a ceremony held in Royal Geographical Society, London on Wednesday April 29th 2015, Whitley awards 2015 was awarded to two Indians Dr Pramod Patil and Dr Anand Kumar, for their contribution to the wildlife conservation in the developing countries.Both received Whitley price money worth of 35000 pounds along with seven other environmentalists .

  • To protect the Great Indian Bustard [GIB] in Thar desert, Dr Pramod Patel was awarded with the prestigious award named ”Green Oscar”.
  • For developing innovative communication systems called Elephant Information Network [EIN] enabling human-elephant coexistence in southern India, Dr Anand Kumar got his award. He developed network that will act as a warning signal to alert people when elephants are nearby them.
  • A trained conflict group of people tracks the elephant movements and conveys that to the people via sms, calls via mobile-operated redlight indicators
  • As a result of positive feedback, due to the reduction of fatal encounters between human and elephant, Mr Anand Kumar is expanding his assignment to Satyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
  • In Dr Pramod case, he was a doctor initially, but later he left his medical profession for the conservation of Great Indian Bustard[GIB] in the Thar desert. GIB was slowly getting reduced because of poaching and due to lack of grassland etc.

ABOUT WHITLEY AWARD

  • The award was established in the year 1994 by Edward Whitley.
  • The main purpose of these award is to recognise and celebrate national and regional conservation leaders across the globe.
  • Initially a single award was made of the prize amount worth 15000 pounds.
  • From 2007, 8 awards were made along with runner and associate awards.
  • Amanda vincent, a marine biologist, was the first recipient of this award in 1994.
  • The Whitley award function are held in the month of spring and hosted by patron of Whitley Fund for Nature, The Princess Royal.
