Telangana Tops in the Implementation of SPMRM

Telangana tops in implementation of Rurban MissionTelangana has secured 1st place among the 34 states and Union Territories(UTs) that implement the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM), Tamil Nadu and Gujarat has secured the 2nd and 3rd place on the list respectively.

  • In the Ranking of the Cluster, among the 295 clusters, the Ryakal cluster of Sangareddy and the Jukkal cluster of Kamareddy in Telangana has secured the 1st and 2nd position respectively. The Aibawk cluster of Aizawl in Mizoram has secured the 3rd position.

The ranking was made based on the performance-based indicators as of 28th December 2021.

About Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM):

In 2016, the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM) was launched by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India with an aim to develop the rural areas by providing them with economic, social and physical infrastructure facilities.

Objective: To stimulate local economic development, enhance basic services, and create well planned Rurban clusters.

Rurban:

i.The large parts of the rural areas in India are not standalone settlements but a part of a cluster of settlements.

ii.These clusters illustrate the potential for growth, have economic drivers and derive locational and competitive advantages.

iii.Once developed, these clusters can be classified as Rurban.

  • SPMRM is developing 300 Rurban clusters identified in rural India covering 34 States and UTs with the objective of bridging the Rural-Urban divide.
