PASSEX 2020 between Russian Federation Navy and Indian Navy held in Eastern IOR

Passage-Exercise-(PASSEX)-between-Russian-Federation-Navy-and-Indian-Navy-in-Eastern-Indian-Ocean-RegionOn the occasion of Indian Navy Day i.e. December 4, 2020, a two-day long Passage Exercise (PASSEX) 2020 between Russian Federation Navy (RuFN) and Indian Navy (IN) was held from 4 to 5 December 2020 in the Eastern Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

  • The Indian side was represented by 2 warships viz. indigenously constructed guided missile frigate Shivalik and anti-submarine corvetteKadmatt along with integral helicopters while Russian side included 3 ships- RuFN guided missile cruiser Varyag, large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleyev and medium ocean tanker Pechenga.
  • The exercise represented Indo-Russian long-term strategic relationship particularly defence cooperation in the maritime domain.

Aim: To enhance interoperability and assimilation of best practices between both friendly navies.

Key Points:

–The exercise included advanced surface and anti-submarine warfare exercises, weapon firings, seamanship exercises and helicopter operations.

–Notably, both nations also conducted biennial INDRA Navy exercise. Its 11th or 2020 edition was held in the Northern IOR on September, 4-5 2020. Click Here to Read

–So far, IN had participated in 13 bilateral and multilateral exercises.

i.On September 23-24, 2020, Indian Navy conducted a two-day long Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in the East Indian Ocean Region (IOR) where Indian side was represented by stealth frigate INS Sahyadri and missile corvette INS Karmuk Australian side included HMAS Hobart.

ii.Indian Navy and Japanese Navy (Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force) have conducted a day long Naval Exercise PASSEX (Passing Exercise) for tactical and communications training, towards the Malacca Strait in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
