Overview of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s one day long visit to Varanasi & Ghazipur in UP

On December 29, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Varanasi and Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh for one day.

PM Modi’s trip to his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi is his second visit there in the last two months.

On his visit to Ghazipur:
On December 29, 2018, PM visited Ghazipur at the first leg of the state visit of Uttar Pradesh.

Here he did the following:

  • He released a commemorative postage stamp on Rajbhar community icon Maharaja Suheldev.
  • He also laid the foundation stone of a Medical College in Ghazipur.At a cost of around Rs 250 crore, the district Hospital of Ghazipur will have 300 beds after the college is ready.
  • He announced that Poorvanchal will be made a medical hub, and a centre for research in agriculture.

On his visit to Varanasi:
On December 29, 2018, PM visited his constituency Varanasi at the second leg of the state visit.

Here he did the following:

  • PM Modi inaugurated 15 projects worth more than rupees 180 crores in Varanasi.
  • He dedicated the 6th International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) South Asia Regional Centrecampus in Varanasi to the nation. It will serve as a hub for rice research and training in South Asia and SAARC region.
  • He also announced the System for Authority and Management of Pension (SAMPANN) software which is developed to ease the problems of pensioners.
  • He also launched a Comprehensive Pension Management Scheme.
  • He attended the One District, One Product Regional Summit at Deendayal Hastakala Sankul. Here he laid foundation stone for 14 new development projects worth around 98 crores.
  • Also, in the event, loans worth Rs. 2000 crore were disbursed.

About One District One Product scheme:
One District One Product scheme is aimed at enhancing the skills of local people and increasing the reach of the indigenous trades, crafts and products from small towns and districts in the state. It is an extension of the ‘Make in India’ project.

Other News:

  • 10 products of Varanasi and nearby regions, have received Geographical Indication tags.
  • He also over saw a detailed 12-minute presentation on the proposed 400 metre Kashi-Vishwanath Corridor project.
  • He also announced that work on Tarighat-Ghazipur-Mau bridge and Poorvanchal Expressway is also progressing.
