Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik launched JAGA Mission Stage-II; Signed MoU with CPR

Odisha CM Patnaik launches initiative to make Odisha 'slum-free' in next 3 yearsOn September 28, 2020, the Chief Minister (CM) of Odisha Naveen Patnaik launched the stage II of JAGA Mission (Odisha Liveable Habitat Mission) from Balasore (Odisha) through video conference, under which all slums in the State will be converted into Adarsh (ideal) colonies within the next 3 years. The process will start immediately in 1,000 slums and then scaled up to cover every slum in the State.

  • This initiative aims at improving the living conditions of 18 lakh slum dwellers by providing them with piped water supply, paved roads, storm water drains, street lights, sanitation, household electricity, community spaces and recreational areas.

SCI-FI initiative at CPR Signs MoU with Government of Odisha

The Centre for Policy Research (CPR), New Delhi under its initiative ‘Scaling City Institutions for India: Land Planning and Housing (SCI-FI: LPH)’ has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Housing & Urban Development Department, Government of Odisha as the knowledge partner of JAGA Mission in its second phase.

  • SCI-FI: LPH, will support the JAGA Mission with systematic planning for “slum freeing” and “slum proofing” and will collaborate to undertake pilots and support scaling up of this programme.

Other Launches:

–CM also initiated the second phase of distribution of land entitlement certificates (LECs) which will benefit 1.05 lakh families in the entire State. 

–He also dedicated 116 Parichay buildings, the multi-purpose community centres in the slums. Another 400 such community centres are under construction.

ii.United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recognises Venkatraipur and Noliasahi, villages of Odisha as ‘Tsunami Ready’ for their overall preparedness to face the tsunami.With this recognition, Odisha became the first state in the India and India became the 1st Country in the Indian Ocean region to achieve the honour from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
