Shri A K Singh CMD, NHPC lays the foundation stone new

On 8th December, 2020 The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC limited, A.K. Singh, has laid foundation stone of head regulator works of Indo-Nepal Link Canal at Barrage of 94.2 MW Tanakpur Power Station of NHPC at Uttarakhand. This project is constructed under the “Mahakali Treaty” signed between India and Nepal.

Note – The Indo-Nepal Link Canal is 1.2 Km long Canal.

About Tanakpur Power Station:

Hydropower Project constructed on the Sharda River also known as Mahakali River in Nepal.

Capacity- 94.2 MW houses, 3 units of 31.4 MW capacity each

Provides development of infrastructure, education, medical facilities and employment avenues to Champawat district, Uttarakhand.

About Mahakali Treaty:

i.Aim- As an integrated development of water resources in the Mahakali River and finalized on the basis of equal partnership of the river.

ii.Signed between India and Nepal in 1996, to resolve the water dispute in the Mahakali river.

iii.The Mahakali treaty replaced the previous agreement regarding the Mahakali River from the Sarada Barrage and the Tanakpur Barrage.

i.On 12th November, 2020, India and Nepal launched the construction of 3rd Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Nepalgunj, Nepal which will bring customs and immigration facilities under one roof to smoothen cross-border movement of cargo trucks.The Portion on Indian side will be built at Rupaidiha (Uttar Pradesh).

ii.The Nepal earthquake of 2015 also known as “Gorkha earthquake” had severely affected thousands of lives as well as the economy. India has committed US$ 150 million in grant and Line of Credit towards housing sector projects supported by the Government of India.
