The National Women’s day is celebrated to recognise the social, cultural, political and economic achievements of Women.
13th February 2021 marks the 142nd birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu.
About Sarojini Naidu:
i.Sarojini Naidu, was born on 13th February 1879, hails from a Bengali Family in Hyderabad.
ii.She was appointed as a resident of Indian National congress in 1925.
iii.She was one of the 15 women in the Constituent Assembly and she was the first woman to become the president of INC.
iv.She was appointed as the governor of the United Province (now Uttar Pradesh) in 1947 and became the first female governor of India.
Contributions to Freedom struggle of India:
i.She was an active member of the Independence movements of India.
ii.During the quit India movement of Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu was imprisoned for 21 months.
Contribution to literature:
i.Sarojini Naidu was a prominent poet and playwright.
ii.Her works described the lives of Indians and the events of India during that period.
iii.Some of the well-known works of Sarojini Naidu were The Golden Threshold, Palanquin Bearers, The Bird Of Time: Songs Of Life, Death & The Spring, The Broken Wing – Songs of Love, Death & Destiny – 1915-1916.
Highlights:
i.To honour Sarojini Naidu, the Asteroid 5647 Sarojininaidu discovered by Eleanor Helin at Palomar Observatory in 1990 was named in her memory. The naming citation was published in 2019.
ii.She was listed in the “150 leading womens” list by the University of London in 2018, to mark the 150th year since women got access to get higher education in the United Kingdom.
