Narendra Modi inaugurates IISCO plant at Burnpur

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated here the upgraded steel plant of IISCO that has the country’s largest blast furnace in Burnpur, West Bengal on Sunday.

  • The plant has been modernised at a cost of Rs. 16,000 crore.
  • Production capacity will go up from 0.85 mtpa to 2.9 mtpa.
  • The modernised facility will have the largest blast furnace.
  • It’s a rebirth of a legacy industrial unit in the country.
  • The newest plant of SAIL replaces the old 0.4 million IISCO facility at Burnpur in West Bengal that still produces pig iron and a little bit of construction steel
  • It is devoted fully towards production of construction steel in its various usages — covering small housing to sophisticated infrastructure needs.
  • Total Set Up Cost – Rs. 16,480 crore
  • It is spread across 953 acres is the fifth integrated steel plant of SAIL.
  • Target :  Central government had planned to attain a capacity to produce 300 million tonnes of steel by 2025 to meet industry demands.
