Ministry of Home Affairs Announced Padma Awards 2021: Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe &  Ram Vilas Paswan Honoured

Ministry-of-Home-Affairs--announced-Padma-Awards-2021On January 25, 2021 Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India announced the Padma Awards 2021. The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian Awards of the country are conferred under 3 categories namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. This year(2021) total 119 Padma awards including 1 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) were awarded.

i.This year(2021) the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind has approved conferment of the awards.

ii.Usually, the President of India confers the awards at a ceremonial function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.

iii.The awards are annually announced on the occasion of Republic Day(January 26) except for brief interruption(s) during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997.

Padma Awards 2021 

i.Of the total awardees, 7 receives Padma Vibhushan, 10 receives Padma Bhushan and 102 receives Padma Shri Awards.

ii.The list includes 29 women awardees, 10 persons from the  category of Foreigners/Non resident Indian- NRI/Person of Indian Origin- PIO/Overseas Citizen Of India- OCI, 16 posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardees.

What are Padma Awards?

  • It was instituted in 1954 and is given to people who have made achievement in various disciplines/ fields of activities, namely, art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, etc.,
  • It is conferred on the recommendation of the Padma Awards Committee which is constituted by the Prime Minister annually.

Padma Vibhushan 

i.It is the second-highest civilian award of India, after the Bharat Ratna.

ii.It is given for exceptional and distinguished service.

Key Persons Who Received the Award:

i.Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, S P Balasubramaniam(Posthumously) and Eminent sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo from Odisha were conferred with Padma Vibhushan 2021.

ii.In addition to them, Father of Fiber Optics Narinder Singh Kapany conferred Padma Vibhushan posthumously

Padma Bhushan 

It is the third-highest civilian award and is conferred for distinguished service of a high order.

Key Persons Who Received the Award:

i.Ram Vilas Paswan(Posthumous), who was the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (elected from the Hajipur constituency of Bihar) was honoured with Padma Bhushan 2021.

ii.Apart from him, Tarun Gogoi, former Assam CM who was the longest serving CM of the state  and prominent Shia preacher Maulana Kalbe Sadiq received this award.

iii.The also includes, Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Muslim cleric Kalbe Sadiq (posthumously), Retired 1967 batch IAS officer Nripendra Mishra and Former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel (posthumously) also received this award.

Key Persons Who Received the Award:

i.The Padma Shri awardees 2021 include writer-illustrator Narayan Debnath, Mithila painter Dulari Devi, and Rajasthani music artist Lakha Khan.

ii.Apart from them, Famous illustrator of children’s magazine KC Sivasankar(posthumously),  Sridhar Vembu, Founder & CEO of Zoho and Rajini Bector, promoter of FMCG company Mrs Bectors Food Specialities also were conferred with this award.

iii.The list also includes Odisha’s teacher Nanda Prusty, author-commentator Rajat Kumar Kar, social worker Shanti Devi, poet and singer Purnamasi Jani and doctor Krishna Mohan Pathi.

iv.In addition to them, the following are the list of awardees:

  • Bangladesh Liberation War fighter Lt. Col. (Retd.) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir and well known musicologist, Rabindra Sangeet exponent and academic Sanjida Khatun from Bangladesh.
  • Veteran table tennis player Mouma Das and the legendary PT Usha’s coach Madhavan Nambiar, better known as OM Nambiar.
  • Former India women’s basketball team captain P Anitha, long-distance runner Sudha Singh, former Indian wrestler Virender Singh, para athlete KY Venkatesh and mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa.

i.On December 15, 2020 Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) won the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award(GPEMA) 2020 in the steel sector during a virtual ceremony of the 2nd cycle of Golden Peacock Awards 2020.
