Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal launched 12th Edition of the Global Innovation Index for the year 2019

On July 24, 2019, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Railways, Piyush Goyal launched the 12th Edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) for the year 2019 in New Delhi. The theme of the 2019 GII is “Creating Healthy Lives – The Future of Medical Innovation”. Key Points:

  • The event was co-hosted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
  • It was for the first time that the GII was launched in an emerging economy.

GII Rankings 2019

  • They are published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD (Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires) and the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners.
  • It ranked 129 economies based on 80 indicators, ranging from intellectual property filing rates to mobile-application creation, education spending and scientific and technical publications.

Ranking of India

  • India was ranked 52nd in 2019 with the score 36.58 out of 100 from 57th position in 2018.
  • It was ranked 81st in 2015, 66th in 2016 and 60th in 2017.
