Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021 – May 28

World Menstrual Hygiene DayMenstrual Hygiene Day is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to educate the importance of Menstrual hygiene. The day aims to promote menstrual health and hygiene for all women and girls.

  • The global coordinator of Menstrual Hygiene Day is WASH United. 
  • United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF), is the global leader in menstrual health and hygiene activities through the development and humanitarian programmes across the world.

The theme of 2021 Menstrual Hygiene Day is “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health.”

Background:

i.The Menstrual Hygiene Day was initiated by the German non-profit WASH United in 2013.

ii.The first Menstrual Hygiene Day was observed on 28th May 2014. 

Why May 28?

28th May (28/5) is chosen as the Menstrual Hygiene Day to highlight the average menstrual cycle(28 days).

Menstrual Hygiene:

Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) aims to ensure that women and girls can manage their periods in a healthy way and enables their full participation in school, work and other activities.

SDG:

The Management of menstrual Hygiene plays a major role in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
