MCEME, OFMK sign Agreement for designing Indigenous Armoured Tracked Repair Vehicle

MCEME Secunderabad and Ordnance Factory Medak have signed a agreement

On February 19, 2021, Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad, Telangana signed an Academic and Technical Linkage Agreement with Ordnance Factory, Medak (OFMK) district, Andhra Pradesh for designing an indigenous Armoured Tracked Repair Vehicle (ATRV).

  • Lieutenant General TSA Narayanan, AVSM (Ati Vishisht Seva Medal), Commandant MCEME & Mr Alok Prasad, General Manager, OFMK were present during the event.

Components of the Agreement

As part of the agreement, MCEME & OFMK will work together on

  • Projects on Armoured Tracked Vehicles
  • Conduct of training of personnel
  • Manufacturing of systems including components in common academic and technical activities towards indigenisation & alternate solutions in the field of engineering & technology of AFVs.

Fact – OFMK is the only manufacturer of Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) in India.

Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV)

An ARV is typically a powerful tank or Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) used for towing or repair of battle-damaged, stuck, and inoperable Armoured fighting vehicles such as Battle Tanks.

  • ARVs ensure efficient and speedy repair and recovery operations during combat.
  • In 2018, Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the procurement of ARVs for Indian Army’s Main Battle Tank (MBT) ‘Arjun’.
  • It was designed & developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) & were manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) for the Indian Army.

i.On June 3, 2020, the Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence (MoD) ordered Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Telangana’s Medak, to supply 156 BMP 2/2k Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) worth Rs 1,094 crore for the Indian army.
