Manobi Bandyopadhyay – India’s first transgender college principal

According to Mr Dipak K Kar,chairman of an educational panel that selects principals of colleges in state,India for the first time had appointed a transgender as principal of a college and is expected to join the duty on 6th June 2015. Manobi Bandyopadhyay would be heading Krishnanagar Women College in West Bengal.

  • Manabi had been teaching in the college for more than 20 years and has the much needed administrative experience.
  • She was selected by usual selection process.
  • Indian transgender activists praised the appointment as proud day for the community of transgenders, who usually face lots of discriminations.
  • Rudrani Chettri, Director of Mitr Trust , a group working for transgender rights, felt proud at this moment as people had started accepting transgenders now.
  • Last year Supreme Court had announced transgender as legal third gender, granting them rights to education employment and other health benefits.
  • Some colleges have even offered a choice to indicate their genders in their application forms also.
  • Krishnanagar womens college offers undergraduate courses in  sciences and humanities and is located in krishnanagar 105 kms north of Kolkata.
  • Kalyani university Vice-chancellor, Rattan Lala Hangloo said Manabi is a good human being, able administrator and good academician and her appointment will empower other members of transgender society

About Transgender

  • They face lots of discriminations and harassment in the public.
  • Tamilnadu has estimated population of more than 30000 transgender population.
  • Sahodari Foundation is working  for transgender rights. It was founded in 2008 by Kalki Subramaniam and is famous for its creative and alternative advocacy methods.
