Classical Indian dancer, Sitara Devi aged 94 has been rested in peace at the city of Mumbai on 25th November 2014. She is considered to have brought the kathak dance into bollywood movies, thereby others calling her as “kathak queen”.
Sitara Devi has been suffering from kidney ailments for which she was operated this month.
The first non-European Nobel laureate in literature, Rabindranath Tagore has described Sitara as Nritya Samragini, meaning the empress of dance after watching her performance at the age of 16 years. She has been conferred with awards like
- Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1969) – Award presented by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama. It is the highest Indian recognition given to practising artists.
- Padma Shree (1973) – Fourth highest civilian award presented by the Government of India.
- Kalidas Samman (1995) – Award presented by Madhya Pradesh Government in recognition of classical sanskrit writer Kalidas.
- Padma Bhushan award was awarded to her, but she refused to accept it.
- Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Award 2011
