ISRO demonstrates Quantum Communication over a distance of 300 Metres for the 1st Time

ISRO makes breakthrough demonstration of free-space

For the 1st time in India, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully demonstrated free-space Quantum Communication over a distance of 300 Metres. The free-space QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) was demonstrated at Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

  • It is a major milestone achievement for unconditionally secured satellite data communication using quantum technologies.
  • Technology – QKD is the technology behind Quantum Communication Technology.
  • A number of indigenously developed technologies such as NAVIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) receivers were used for the demonstration.

Benefits

  • Quantum Cryptography is based on the laws of Quantum Physics will be easier than conventional cryptosystems used for data-encryption rely on the complexity of mathematical algorithms.
  • It is considered ‘Future-proof’ since no future advancements in computational power can break quantum-cryptosystems.

Future Goal

  • The demonstration is a major breakthrough towards ISRO’s goal of demonstrating Satellite-Based Quantum Communication (SBQC).
  • In the next step, ISRO plans to demonstrate the technology between 2 Indian ground stations.

It is an institution of research under ISRO.Late Dr. Vikram Sarabhai established the India’s first Experimental Satellite Communication Earth Station (ESCES) in Ahmedabad.Later in 1972, the different units of ISRO in Ahmedabad pursuing research in applications of space technology were merged to form SAC.
