Iran and P5+1 gave nod for nuclear agreement Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action

Iran and the P5+1 Group have adopted a joint statement for the removal of UNSC resolutions and sanctions against the Islamic Republic in exchange of greatly limiting Iran’s uranium-enrichment programme. The framework agreement is called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is intended to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The P5+1 include all the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council., ie US, UK, France, China and Russia plus Germany. 

Key Points to note in the Historical Nuclear Agreement

• Iran is permitted to keep its nuclear facilities, which it insists are for civilian uses only, but they would be subject to strict production limits.
• Two facilities will be converted into research sites without fissile material.
• Iran should reduce the number of centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium, by two-thirds to 5,060.
• Iran must reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium from 10,000 kilograms to 300 kilograms, which will not be enough for a nuclear weapon, for the next 15 years.
• Iran has agreed to redesign a heavy-water reactor at Arak in a way that would keep it from producing plutonium, a weapons-usable fuel.
• The Iranians won the right to research, but not to use more modern machines for production for the next 10 years.
• Iran should implement the Additional Protocol of the IAEA, providing greater access and information regarding its nuclear programme.
