International Day of Families – 15 May

The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.

Theme for 2015 : Men in Charge? Gender Equality and Children’s Rights in Contemporary Families.

  • The 2015 observance of the International Day of Families aims to promote gender equality and rights of children within families.
  • It will also highlight prevention of family violence through fair family law frameworks and a variety of programme interventions.
  • The International Day of Families has inspired a series of awareness-raising events, including national family days.
  • UN Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) supports the worldwide observance of the International Day of Families (15 May) by preparing background information on the family for use.

The first such day was observed on May 15, 1994.

Emphasis of International Day of Families :

  • The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families.
  • To increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
  • To help workers everywhere provide for their families financially and emotionally, while also contributing to the socio-economic development of their societies.
  • Highlights the need for work-family balance.
  • Activities include workshops and conferences, radio and television programmes, newspaper articles and cultural programmes highlighting relevant themes.
  • Highlighting the importance of families as basic units of society.

Stats :

Families are under pressure

  1. The number of single parent families is growing. In Africa, nearly 30% of all families are headed by a single mother.
  2. 151 million children worldwide have lost one or both parents.
  3. Poverty is the  risk factor for family crises that lead to child abandonment in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

UN Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) :

Part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat.

Objective : To strengthen international cooperation for social development.
