Indo-Pakistan Nuclear Facilities List Exchange

India and Pakistan exchanged the list of their nuclear installations for the 25th consecutive year under a bilateral agreement that bars them from attacking each other’s atomic facilities.

  • It was exchanged through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad.
  • The list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear installations between India and Pakistan.

It bilateral agreement signed between India and Pakistan by the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his Pakistani counterpart Benazir Bhutto.

  • It was signed on December 31, 1988 and entered into force on January 27, 1991.
  • It bars both nations from carrying out any surprise attack (or to assist foreign power to attack) on each other’s nuclear installations and facilities.
  • Under it both countries inform each other about their nuclear installations and facilities that need to be covered under the Agreement on 1 January every year.

List of Prisoners
The two countries exchanged the list of prisoners lodged in the jails of the other country consistent with the provisions of the Agreement on Consular Access between India and Pakistan.

  • The agreement on prisoners was signed on May 31, 2008, that provides a comprehensive list of nationals of each country lodged in other country’s jails has to be exchanged twice each year on January 1 and July 1 while the list of nuclear installations is exchanged only on January 1.
