India’s Foodgrain production to rise by 2.66% to 305.44 MT in 2020-21: DAC & FW Estimates

Foodgrain output to rise newThe Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare (DAC & FW) has released the 3rd Advance Estimates of production of major agricultural crops for 2020-21. According to the estimates, the total foodgrain production in India is estimated to rise by 2.66% to a record 305.44 Million Tonnes (MT)  in 2020-21 (compared to 2019).

  • It is an increase of 7.94 MT than the production of foodgrain of 297.50 MT achieved during 2019-20.
  • The 305.44 MT estimate is higher by 26.66 MT compared to average production of foodgrains of the previous five years  (2015-16 to 2019-20).
  • The assessment is based on data received from States.

As per 3rd Advance Estimates, the estimated production of major crops during 2020-21 are as under

Rice 121.46 MT (record)

(higher by 9.01 MT compared to last five years’ average production of 112.44 MT)

Wheat 108.75 MT (record)

(higher by 8.32 MT than the average wheat production of 100.42 MT)

Nutri/Coarse Cereal 49.66 MT

(higher by 1.91 MT compared to 47.75 MT achieved during 2019-20)

Pulses 25.58 MT

(higher by 3.64 MT than last 5 years average production of 21.93 MT)

Oilseeds 36.57 MT (record)

(higher by 3.35 MT than the production of 33.22 MT during 2019-20)

Sugarcane 392.80 MT

(higher by 30.73 MT than the average sugarcane production of 362.07 MT)

Cotton 36.49 million bales (of 170 kg each)

(higher by 4.59 million bales than the average cotton production)

Jute & Mesta 9.62 million bales (of 180 kg each)

Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar  stated that the Government has set Foodgrains Production target for the crop year 2021-22 at 307 Million Tonnes (MT), the production target for 2020-21 was 301.92 MT.
