Indian diplomat appointed as head of UNITAR

A senior Indian diplomat to the United Nations, Nikhil Seth, has been appointed as the head of UNITAR, a specialized UN agency catering exclusively to the training and research purposes of the nations. The appointment was made by UN Secretary General :  Ban Ki-moon ( South Korea ).

He will serve as the Executive Director of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). He will take the title from serving Ex. Dir. Sally Fegan-Wyles of Ireland.

Seth holds a Masters degree in Economics from Delhi University. He is currently the director of the UN’s Division for Sustainable Development and has also headed the, Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference, on Sustainable Development, in the past. As an IFS officer, he had served at the Indian UN Mission in Geneva and Democratic Republic of Congo.

  • UNITAR stands for United Nations Institute for Training and Research , and is an official arm of the United Nations Organisation.
  • Its objective is to develop capacities of individuals, organisations and institutions to enhance global decision-making.
  • UNITAR is governed by a Board of Trustees and is headed by an Executive Director.
