India unveils online Climate Equity Monitor Dashboard 

Climate Equity Monitor Online dashboard for assessing emissionsThe Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav has launched an online dashboard- the “Climate Equity Monitor” (CME) to assess equity in climate action, inequalities in emissions ,energy and resource consumption across the world. It was launched in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26 (Conference of Parties) 2021 in Glasgow (United Kingdom).

Objective

To  monitor the performance of Annex-I Parties(developed countries) under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) based on

i.The foundational principles of the Climate Convention,

ii.The principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).

Highlights

i.Climate Monitor Equity (CME) will also monitor the performance and policies of the Non Annex-I Parties (developing countries) of UNFCCC.

ii.The analysis will be based on cumulative emissions and carbon budgets underlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

iii.A website will be provided to show the assessment of the equitable sharing of the global carbon budget is the fundamental equity principle.

What is Climate Monitor Equity (CME)?

i.The CME dashboard is developed by  Climate Change Group at the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and the Natural Sciences and Engineering department at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) Bengaluru (Karnataka) and other independent researchers.

ii.It focuses on assessing at international level equity in climate action, inequalities in emissions etc.

iii.The CME will address the climate policies of the world without any differentiation.
