Highlights of Ethiopia Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen 4-day visit to India

Ethiopia Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen HassenOn February 16-19,2021, Ethiopia Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen was on a four-day visit to India where he inaugurated the new Chancery & Residence at Ethiopian Embassy, New Delhi and met Union Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) at Hyderabad House, New Delhi.

Note – This is Demeke Mekonnen’s first visit to Asia since taking charge as Foreign Minister in November 2020.

MoU Signed between India-Ethiopia:

India and Ethiopia signed following two memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the presence of both ministers.

  • Mutual Visa Exemption for holders of Diplomatic Passports
  • MoU between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) – Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), India and Wollo University, Ethiopia.

India-Ethiopia Business Forum:

ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India), in association with the Embassy of Ethiopia in New Delhi, organized the India-Ethiopia Business Forum on 17th February, 2021 at which investment opportunities in Ethiopia were highlighted by the Ethiopian side and by Indian investors.

  • The forum was attended by Minister of State (MoS) Vellamvelly Muraleedharan, MEA.

Key Points:

–During the meeting discussions were held on a range of bilateral & regional issues.

–Both sides agreed to expand bilateral relations in the sectors of defence, economic, S&T (Science & technology), digital & cultural cooperation.

–The two Ministers jointly inaugurated the newly-constructed Chancery building and Embassy residence of the Embassy of Ethiopia in New Delhi.

i.In January 2021, Ramakrishan, Founder of Corporate Clinic in Chennai was appointed as the Director of the India Africa Trade Council.

ii.A 30-member delegation from South India of the India Africa Trade Council will visit COMESA region of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia in the month of April 2021 and various MOUs in Health sector, Skill evelopment, Agriculture are expected to be signed with various companies and organizations in this region.
