Hari Shankar Brahma – New Chief Election Commissioner

President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Election Commissioner Hari Shankar Brahma as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, as the current CEC V S Sampath is getting retired on January 15, 2014. Brahma was 1975-batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre and he hails from Assam. 

H S Brahma has become the second person from North-East India to be appointed to this post after J M Lyndogh.

The Election Commission of India is a Constitutional Body. 

The Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were first tried in Kerala for Assembly Elections. 

Sukumar Sen was the First CEC of India. 

The Election Commissioners have a tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

In 2014, the Namibian government has purchased 3,400 India-made EVMs for their Presidential Elections.
