HAL bags ADE-DRDO supply order for ABHYAS target platform

On 17th December 2021, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has obtained an order for manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing and supply of High-Speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) System, named ‘ABHYAS‘ from the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

  • After completion of this order, HAL  will become the Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) for the supply of HEAT systems along with private firms (50 percent of the volume).
  • This order marks the beginning of the series production of ABHYAS.

Key Highlights:

The HAL platform is estimated to have large requirements from the tri-services, and DRDO laboratories for evaluation trials of missile programmes.

About ABHYAS:

i.ABHYAS was first successfully flight-tested in May 2019 that is designed and developed by DRDO’s ADE, Bengaluru and further evaluation trials were conducted by ADE, DRDO.

ii.The air vehicle is launched using twin under-slung boosters as the initial acceleration to the vehicle which is powered by a gas turbine engine to sustain a long endurance flight at subsonic speed.

Features:

i.The target aircraft is equipped with Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) based Inertial Navigation System (INS) for navigation along with the Flight Control Computer (FCC) for guidance and control.

ii.The vehicle is a fully programmed autonomous flight

iii.The check-out of air vehicle is done using a laptop-based Ground Control Station (GCS)
