Ministry of Railways flagged off Vigithon to fight against corruption

  • To mark the Vigilance Awareness Week Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu flagging-off a marathon in the city Mumbai on 25th October, 2015.
  • It was organised by public sector lender, Union Bank of India.

Theme : “Vigithon: A run for corruption free India”

Aim :

Educating the people about several instances of corruption and empowering them with the means to fight the problem.

Indian Army celebrates 68th Infantry Day

  • To mark the landing of the army in Sringar in 1947 to evict Pakistani intruders from Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army celebrated its 68th Infantry Day with traditional solemnity and gaiety.
  • Infantry Day was celebrated with traditional fervor with wreath laying ceremony organised at ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ at India Gate here.
  • Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, senior veterans, Colonels of Infantry Regiments and serving officers attended the ceremony.

China made copying in examinations a crime punishable up to seven years

  • As per the ninth amendment of Criminal Law of China, students trying to copy in examinations will face a jail term of up to seven years.
  • This new law will be effective from 1st November 2015. The information was published by China Radio International on 25 October 2015.
  • The law will make cheating on major exams in China a crime punishable with a jail sentence. Parents involved will also be seriously punished.

What does the new law stipulates?

The amended criminal law stipulates that those who aid in cheating will be sentenced to three to seven years in prison and face penalties. The law also stipulates that people trying to impersonate during examinations will be detained by police.

What was the Earlier Situation?

Previously, college students involved in exam-related fraud were punished by their universities, through warning, disqualification of their degree or dismissal.

Poland elections: Law and Justice Party won elections

In Poland, conservative opposition Law and Justice party has won parliamentary elections. Exit polls suggest it has enough seats to govern alone, with an anticipated 39 per cent of the vote. Its eurosceptic leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has claimed victory, and the outgoing Prime Minister, Ewa Kopacz of the centrist Civic Platform party, has admitted defeat.

RBI, Bangladesh Bank ink MoU on information exchange

  • The Reserve Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh Bank for exchange of supervisory information.
  • “The Reserve Bank of India, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Supervisory Cooperation and Exchange of Supervisory Information with the Bangladesh Bank, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh,”
  • RBI has entered into Memorandam of Understanding, Letter for Supervisory Co-operation and Statement of Co-operation with supervisors of a few countries to promote greater cooperation and share supervisory information.
  • With this, RBI has signed 30 such MoUs, one Letter for Supervisory Cooperation and one Statement of Cooperation.

Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi: Increase of Financial Assistance from Rs. 2 Lakhs to 5 Lakhs

Government has decided to enhance the financial powers delegated to designated Central Government hospitals/institutes from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh  under Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN) for providing financial assistance in cases where emergency surgery is to be conducted.

For Whom : Who are suffering from major life threatening diseases related to heart, liver, kidney and cancer cases, etc.

Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN) :

  • RAN was set up in 1997 to provide financial assistance to patients, living below poverty line.
  • Revolving Funds have been set up in 12 Central Government hospitals/institutes and amount up to Rs. 50 lakh is placed at their disposal for providing financial assistance.
  • These Schemes have benefitted 37063 poor patients so far.

FIIs/RFPIs can now invest up to 74 percent in DEN Networks Limited: RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) notified that the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs)/Registered Foreign Portfolios Investors (RFPIs) can now invest up to 74 percent of the paid up capital of DEN Networks Limited under the Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS).

DEN Networks Limited has passed resolutions at its Board of Directors level and a special resolution by the shareholders, agreeing for enhancing the limit for the purchase of its equity shares and convertible debentures by FIIs/RFPIs.

Yes Bank operationalises IFSC banking unit in GIFT City

Private sector lender Yes Bank has started operations from its IFSC banking unit at the Gujarat International Finance Tec City.

  • It is the first bank to start operations in GIFT City by setting up an IBU (IFSC Banking Unit).
  • It will also allow the bank to raise foreign currency funding through MTNs and other routes as appropriate.

BlackBerry appoints Narendra Nayak as India MD

BlackBerry day appointed Narendra Nayak as the Managing Director of its India operations .

  • Narendra Nayak replaces Sunil Lalvani, who had quit the organisation in June.
  • He will also be responsible for BlackBerry’s growing ecosystem of indirect channels in India that includes Value-Added Reseller (VAR), systems integrator and reseller partners.

China launches Tianhui-1C mapping satellite of Tianhui-1

  • China launched its third mapping satellite of the Tianhui-1 series into orbit from the Jiuquan launching base located in the country’s northwestern Gansu province.

Tianhui-1C for :

  • Tianhui-1C will enhance the country’s ability to carry out scientific research, mapping, scientific experiments, land resource surveys, mapping, crop yield estimation and disaster relief.
  • It was the 215th launch of the Long March series rockets, said the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASTC), China’s primary launch vehicle and satellite contractor.
  • First Tianhui 1 mapping satellite of the series was launched in August 2010.

Tsunami Early Warning System Successfully Tested In Mumbai

A newly-installed tsunami early warning system siren was successfully tested after the 11 years tsunami which had hit the Indian Ocean countries in 2004.

Test Location : Mumbai by Captain KLV Prabhakaran for the Regional Meteorological Command.

This system was installed at the Meteorology Office of Western Naval Command by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Earth & Sciences (MoES), Government of India.

Tsunami Early Warning System :

  • The siren and a digital electronic board is part of a system for issuing early warning in case of a tsunami threat in the Indian Ocean region.
  • The siren has a radical range of three kilometres in all directions and will have continuous hoot for one minute.
  • In case of a threat, seven tsunami buoys with sensors will record the height and speed of waves and will alert the monitoring centre in Hyderabad.

India finishes 9th at Nomura Cup

Indian team led by Patna’s Aman Raj, current leader of the IGU men amateur, finished 9th on the final day of the 27th Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship – Nomura Cup.

Venue : Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

IGU rank – Samarth Dwivedi, Rahul Ravi and Harimohan Singh, IGU ranked 3rd, 5th and 7th respectively.

Japanese team won the Nomura Cup title for the first time since 1989 defeated Chinese Taipei at the Yas Links Golf Club.

  • Men’s Asia-Pacific Teams Championship or Nomura Cup is the trophy of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship. The tournament is played every two years across Asia-Pacific region.
  • The tournament originated in Japan in 1961.

Emily Pedersen wins Hero India Open

Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen notched her maiden Ladies European Tour title in a dramatic fashion at 9th Edition Of Hero Womens Indian Open Golf Championship.
Amateur Aditi Ashok came up with a five-over 77 on the final day but finished as the best-Indian at tied 13th.

Pedersen received the glittering Hero Women’s Indian Open trophy from Pawan Munjal, Chairman, Managing Director and CEO of Hero MotoCorp and she also bagged a USD 60,000 cheque.

India retains 2nd position in ICC ODI ranking

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on 26 October 2015 launched the official ICC men’s Team Rankings from Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20I cricket.

South Africa with 125 rating was placed at the top position in the Test ranking list, while Australia topped the ODI list with 127 ratings. Sri Lanka with 126 points topped the list of T20I rankings.
