INDIAN AFFAIRS

Kolkata to get India’s first underwater Metro
Kolkata will launch an underwater Metro which will pass through tunnels several feet under the Hooghly.
Key Notes:
i. The first underwater transportation tunnel of India is ready with the second one nearing completion.
ii. The tunnel has been constructed 30 meters below riverbed.
iii. It will be connecting two main terminals: Howrah and Sealdah – each of which has a footfall of about 10-12 lakh passengers per day.
iv. It is just a few meters away from the famous Howrah Bridge, built in the last century to connect Howrah and Kolkata.
v. The entire 16.6-kilometre stretch of the first tunnel is ready.
vi. The second tunnel is yet to be completed of the entire length, 10.8 kms is underground and around one kilometre is underwater.
vii. The standard gauge technology has been used to ensure that the tracks have sharp curves.
viii. Managing Director of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd is Satish Kumar.

22nd edition of European Union Film Festival begins
The 22nd European Union Film Festival (EUFF) has opened at Siri Fort auditorium on 10^th of June, 2017 with the screening of Estonian film Cherry Tobacco.
Key Notes:
i. The five-day event is being organised by the Delegation of the EU and Embassies of EU Members.
ii. It is in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
iii. Movies from comedy to family drama, romance and adventure are part of EUFF.
iv. Tomasz Kozlowski, ambassador of European Union to India said it is believed that cinema has a universal appeal and helps to bring people and cultures together.
v. The festival includes the story of inner struggle of a father, and his complicated relationship with his son; the coming of age of a 17-year-old girl, who has to take decisions that even a grown up woman will find difficult to make.

Insurance up for crop loan in Rajasthan
The Rajasthan government has raised the insurance cover by 1 lakh to 6 lakh for farmers who avail crop loan from cooperative banks in the State.
Key Notes:
i. It aims to bring around 25 lakh peasants under the scheme.
ii. The Rajasthan government has raised the insurance amount by 1 lakh in the present fiscal year in the ‘Raj Sahakar Personal Accident Insurance Scheme’ targeted to cover more than 25 lakh farmers.

Jitendra Singh Announces Hill Area Development Programme in Manipur
The Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DrJitendra Singh DoNER)has announced the launch of, “Hill Area Development Programme” (HADP) for Northeast in Imphal (Manipur)
Key Notes:
i. He announced the launch of the programme to address a meet of Investors and Entrepreneurs, organised by NEDF (North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd), with joint participation of the Union Ministry of DoNER and the Government of Manipur.
ii. The programme aims to bridge the gap between the hill and valley districts in terms of infrastructure, quality of roads, health and education.
About Hill Area Development Programme (HADP)
♦  HADP was launched during the Fifth Five Year Plan aimed at balanced regional development.
♦ Areas which form part of a State (which are termed as Designated Hill Areas) covered under the HADP, are the areas identified in 1965 by a Committee of the National Development Council (NDC) and those recommended by the High Level Committee for Western Ghats in 1972

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan inaugurates India Pavilion at Expo 2017
On June 10, 2017, Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Harsh Kumar Jain inaugurated India Pavilion at Expo 2017 at Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan. The world class exhibition displays renewable and green technologies.
i. Theme of Expo 2017 is “Future Energy”
ii. Expo 2017, Astana makes Kazakhstan the fourth Asian country to host a world expo after Japan, South Korea and China.
iii. According to preliminary estimates, the three-month exhibition (from 10^th June 2017 to 10^th September 2017) is expected to receive more than five million visitors from 100 countries and 10 international organisations.
iv. The exhibition will cover an area of 113 hectares, 25 of which will host 93 showrooms.
v. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the opening ceremony of Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

EU, France grant 3.5 mn euros to curb emissions in India
EU and France will give a grant of 3.5 million euros to three Indian cities- Nagpur, Kochi and Ahmedabad. It is a part of the EU’s commitment under the Paris Climate agreement.
Key Notes:
i. It aims to curb emissions and promote sustainability in these cities.
ii. India has become the first country to get benefits from the MYC initiative.
iii. The initiative is aimed at helping 100 cities across the world to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
iv. The grants have been provided to help India’s smart city programme under the ‘Mobilise Your City’ (MYC) initiative.
v. The MYC initiative is supported by the French and German government and also has financial support of the European Union (EU).
vi. It will promote sustainable urban transport and sustainability in urban spaces.

IOB launches retail mart in Thiruvananthapuram
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), the Lead Bank for Thiruvananthapuram district, has launched the Retail Mart, a retail lending concept, in Kerala’s capital city.

i. The exclusive facility that handles retail products has started functioning at the main branch.
ii. The Retail Mart has been designed with an aim to complete all the pre-release formalities at the customer’s doorstep.
iii. It will also sanction quality retail loans at a competitive rate of interest with a minimum turnaround time.

India drags US to World Trade Organisation for not complying verdict on steel duty
India has approached World Trade Organisation (WTO) against US for its non-compliance of a verdict on high import duty on certain Indian steel imports.
i. As of now, India has requested WTO dispute consultations with the US to address US compliance with WTO ruling. If this issue remains unresolved post consultations, India will approach WTO’s compliance panel.
ii. In order to resolve this issue, US needs to amend its domestic regulations pertaining to carbon steel products.

Soumitra Chatterjee to get France’s Legion of Honour
Veteran Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee has been conferred with the highest French civilian honour, the Legion d’Honneur.
i. Ambassador of France to India Alexandre Ziegler will be in Kolkata to present the honour.
ii. It is to be noted that, exactly 30 years ago, Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded the Legion of Honor by then French President Francois Mitterrand in 1987.

China launches record-breaking drone swarm
China has launched a record breaking swarm of 119 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles on 11^th of June, 2017
Key Notes:
i. The China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC)has said that the feat broke the previous record of a swarm of 67 drones.
ii. According to the CETC, “swarm intelligence” is regarded as the core of artificial intelligence of unmanned systems and the future of intelligent unmanned systems.
iii. The 119 drones performed catapult-assisted take-offs and formations in the sky.
iv. Chinese military is also testing to launch mass armed drones as a new technique in battle conditions.
v. China is currently the largest maker of drones.

2017 French Open – Overview
116th edition of the French Open tennis tournament took place at Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France from 28^th May 2017 to 11^th June 2017.

Kutwal wins gold at world chess championship for differently-abled
Shashikant Kutwal has won the gold medal at the 17th World Individual Chess Championship for differently-abled on 11^th of June.

Dhanya-Sanmay win U-14 Asian junior tennis title
Dhanya Shah and Sanmay Gandhi have won the Under-14 doubles title of the Asian Junior Tennis Championships on 11^th of June.

i. Asian Junior Tennis Championships heldat the Balewadi Stadium in Pune.
ii. Second seeded Dhanya and Sanmay defeated Vishesh Patel and Shashidhar Kota 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final.

Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships held in Punjab
21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships was held from 1^st – 4^th June 2017 in Patiala, Punjab.
♦ The event was organised by Athletics Federation of India (AFI) with support from Punjab Athletics Association and Sports Authority of India.
♦ The championship provided an opportunity to Indian track and field athletes to qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships which is scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar from 6^th-9^th July 2017.
♦ More than 700 Indian athletes including top athletes such as Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw),Ankit Sharma (Long Jump), Tintu Luka (800m), Sudha Singh (3000m SC) and Irfan K T (20km Race Walk) participated in this event.
Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold With Meet Record
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the gold in men’s javelin throw contest on the second day of the Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala on June 2, 2017.
i. Neeraj’s throw of 85.63m, a new meet record, eclipsed Devender Singh’s mark of 79.65m recorded in Mangalore in 2015.
ii. Devender finished second with a best effort of 83.82m, while Abhishek Singh of Uttar Pradesh threw the spear to 77m to claim the bronze.
iii. Neeraj Chopra and Devender Singh, both have already qualified for this year’s World Championships in London
Sarita Singh sets new national record in Federation Cup
Sarita Singh of Uttar Pradesh set a new national record in the women’s hammer throw with an effort of 65.25m to claim the gold medal at the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championship in Patiala.
i. Sarita broke the previous national record of 62.74m recorded by Manju Bala in 2014.
ii. She also became the first Indian woman to cross the 65m mark.
iii. Gunjan Singh finished second with a throw of 61.95 while Nidhi Kumari took bronze with a throw of 57.99m.
Anu Rani smashes own national record, books World Championship berth
On June 4, 2017, Javelin thrower Anu Rani smashed her own national record and won the gold medal on the fourth and final day of the 21st Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala.
i. Anu Rani, representing Uttar Pradesh, threw the spear to a distance of 61.86m to better her own earlier national mark of 60.01m.
ii. By accomplishing this feat, Anu Rani also qualified for the World Championships to be held in London in August 2017, for which the qualifying mark stands at 61.40m.

OBITUARY

Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, former President of the UN General Assembly, passed away
Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann a former foreign Minister of Nicaragua and a former President of the UN General Assembly has passed away on 8 June 2017. He was 84.
Key Notes:
i. He was born in the United States to a Nicaraguan diplomat who served in the administration of dictator Anastasio Somoza Garcia.
ii. He served as the UN General Assembly President in 2008 and 2009.

Adam West, TV’s Batman dies at 88
Adam West was an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series “Batman” had died on 9^th of June in Los Angeles. He was 88.
Key Notes:
i.He had made a record 156 individual screen appearances as Batman, including 120 in the live-action television series, along with several
ii.Batman was nominated for the Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series in its first year, losing out to CBS’ The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Ramesh’s book on the naturalist in Indira Gandhi launched
The book “Indira Gandhi – A life in Nature“, was launched by Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the Indira Gandhi Memorial.
Key Notes:
i. The former Union minister Jairam Ramesh, who has authored the book published by Simon & Schuster, presented the first copy of the book to the Congress President.
ii. The book showcases how Indira Gandhi led India to the path of conservation and made it a priority of economic development.
iii. The book brings out some of the unpublished works sourced through archives and personal sources material.
iv. It also highlighted the unexplored aspect of Indira Gandhi’s life and her love for nature.
v. Inher brief speech, Sonia said in front of media how her mother-in-law would spend hours in Delhi’s famous Nehru Park while it was being landscaped in the early 1960s to plan clusters of trees and flowers to be planted there.
vi. Ramesh also highlighted how the former prime minister brought the Project Lion first and then Project Tiger for conservation of the big cats.
vii. Karan Singh recalled how Indira Gandhi first made lion the national animal and four years later got it changed to the Tiger.
viii. The book would be made available in a number of languages including Hindi, Malayali, Kannada and some others.
