INDIAN AFFAIRS

President Mukherjee launched four digital initiatives over e-education
President Pranab Mukherjee on 9th July launched digital initiatives Swayam, Swayam Prabha, National Academic Depository and National Digital Library in New Delhi to push e-education in the country.
i. According to ministry of human resource development (MHRD) these initiatives will increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in the higher education from 5 (2015-16) to 30 by 2020.
ii. These courses have been developed by over 1,000 expert faculty members from institutions like IITs, Delhi University and JNU.

First International Aviation Security seminar organised by  National Security Guard in Haryana
On 6th and 7th July, 2017, National Security Guard (NSG) organised First International Aviation Security Seminar in Manesar, Haryana.
i. The seminar was inaugurated by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha on July 6, 2017, whereas Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (I/C) Rajiv Pratap Rudy attended the seminar on the second day.
ii. Rudy also unfurled the tricolor at the 26th highest Monumental Flagpole in the NSG campus. 

India plans to invite Leaders of ASEAN countries for 2018 Republic Day celebrations
Indiais planning to invite the leaders of the 10 ASEAN nations for the Republic Day parade for 2018. It has been announced on 8th of July 2017.
Key Points:
i. It is being seen as a major step towards the government’s ‘Act East’ policy.
ii. It will bring together leaders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
iii. This year also marks the 25th year of dialogue partnership between India and ASEAN.
iv. It will be the first Republic day for India where so many chief guests will be invited.
v. World leaders like former US President Barack Obama, former French president François Hollande and UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have been chief guests at Republic Day celebrations in the past.
vi. Through ASEAN India has enhanced its maritime cooperation and realised the full potential of its ocean economy.
vii. India will continue to step up cooperation in countering terrorism, piracy and other transnational crimes.

First Edition of WINGS 2017 – “Sab Uden, Sab Juden”- Expanding Regional Connectivity Hosted in New Delhi
Civil Aviation Ministry on 8th July hosted the First edition of WINGS 2017 – “Sab Uden, Sab Juden”- Expanding Regional Connectivity. The  session was chaired by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and the Union Minister of State for Civil AviationShri Jayant Sinha .
i. 338 delegates from Government and Civil Aviation sector participated in the first edition of WINGS-2017.
ii. There was participation from 28 States and Union Territories and out of this 19 states and Union Territory made presentation emphasizing the special packages to the airlines under RCS- UDAN.
iii. During the Wings-2017, Interactive sessions with Stakeholders of entire Ecosystem such as Tourism Departments, Tour Operators, Airport Operators, and other players in the value chain was convened.
iv. The States capitalized upon the unique platform provided by the ministry, wherein they had 112 one to one discussions (G2B meetings) with the Airlines operators .
v. The 33 unserved airports are being added for scheduled flights in one year as compared to 75 operational airports during last 70 years

Delhi govt launches Free Surgery Scheme
Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on 8th July, 2017 announced a new health scheme to enable capital’s residents avail free surgery in private hospitals at government’s cost. This would be applicable in case government hospitals were unable to operate within one month.
i. According to the scheme, if the waiting period for 52 surgeries — heart bypass, cataract and kidney stones removal,etc—listed by the government is more than one month, patients would be eligible to get it done at 48 empanelled hospitals.
ii. The new scheme is open for all residents of Delhi, irrespective of their income slab. The patient can get the authorization letter from Delhi Arogya Kosh (Health Fund) after submitting residence proof along with OPD slip.
iii. The government has tied up with 21 private laboratories to provide 13 expensive medical tests including CT scan and MRI to anyone coming to Delhi government hospitals.

Two day Regional conference on Good governance and Replication of best held in Nainital, Uttarakhand
A two days Regional Conference on “Good Governance and Replication of Best Practices” will begin in Nainital, Uttarakhand from 9th of July.
Key Notes:
i. It is organised by the Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Government of India in collaboration with Government of Uttarakhand.
ii. Delegates from 12 States and four UTs of Northern, Western and Central Region will be participating in the conference.
iii. The Conference will be inaugurated by Secretary, DARPG, Shri C. Viswanath.
iv. Its objective is to create a common platform to share experiences in the formulation and implementation of citizen centric governance.
v. It has also stated to improve public service delivery through e-Governance, transparent, accountable and citizen-friendly effective administration.
vi. As per the programme schedule, three sessions will be held during the conference.
vii. In the first session on 7th July 2017, two presentations will be made:
a.One on the Paperless Himachal Legislative Assembly
b.Another on Good Governance Index
viii. The event brings together national and state level organisations along with other stakeholders including intelligentsia and media on the same platform.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

12th G20 Summit held in Hamburg, Germany
The 2017 G20 Summit was the 12th meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20), which was held on 7th and 8th July, 2017, in HamburgGermany.The theme for this year’s G20 Summit was “Shaping an Inter-connected World”.
i. At the G20 Summit, a consensus emerged on issues like fight against terror, global warming and protectionism among majority of the world leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
ii. On July 7, 2017, G20 leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to facilitate swift and targeted exchange of information between intelligence, law enforcement and judicial authorities to crackdown on the global scourge of terrorism and to check its funding sources.
iii. G20 leaders adopted a World Bank funding plan of up to USD 1 billion for women entrepreneurs in developing nations, an initiative championed by US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump.
iv. At G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the action plan against terror and presented a 10-point action agenda for it.

Informal BRICS Leaders meeting held in Hamburg, Germany
The Informal BRICS Leaders meeting held in Hamburg, Germany. The leaders had discussed preparations and priorities for the forthcoming Xiamen BRICS Summit.
Key Points:
i.The forthcoming 9th BRICS Summit will be in September in Xiamen, China.
ii.Prime Minister Modi has mentioned in his speech that BRICS has been a strong voice and needs to show leadership on terrorism and global economy.
iii. He also emphasize that G20 should collectively oppose terrorism financing, franchises, safe havens, support and sponsors.
iv. Prominent members attending this year’s summit include US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
v. PM Modi also said to focus on implementing Paris Agreementglobally as essential to fighting climate change.He stated to prioritize on the cooperation and development of Africa.
vi. After concluding the meeting President Xi appreciated India’s strong resolve against terrorism and the momentum in BRICS introduced under India’s Chairmanship.

India emerging as front-runner in fight against climate change: World Bank
According to the World Bank, India is emerging as a front runner in the global fight against climate change,with a sweeping commitment to solar power, innovative solutions and energy efficiency initiatives to supply its people with 24×7 electricity by 2030.
i. India is contributing to global efforts to save the planet from the effects of climate change with its conscious choice to use significantly more clean energy to fuel its growth
ii. World Bank said the country also walked away from plans to install nearly 14 GW of coal-fired power plants.
iii. The Indian government is setting ambitious targets that include 160 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar by 2022 which will help hundreds of million people light their homes.
iv. With nearly 300 days of sunshine every year, India has among the best conditions in the world to capture and use solar energy.

BANKING & FINANCE

India to join new Global foreign exchange committee
India will soon get a seat on the Global Foreign Exchange Committee (GFXC), a newly-constituted forum of central bankers and experts working towards promotion of a robust and transparent forex market.
i. The Financial Stability Board (FSB), an international body for global financial system, in a progress report on ‘reducing misconduct risks in the financial sector’.
ii. The committee was set up in London during a meeting in May 2017 of public and private sector representatives from the foreign exchange committees of 16 international forex trading centres.

Nepal SBI launches first paperless Banking services sbiINTOUCH
Nepal SBI Bank, a subsidiary of the State Bank of India, on 8th July launched its fully automatic digital banking services  sbiINTOUCH in  Kathmandu.
i. This is for the first time the State Bank of India has expanded the paperless banking system outside India.
ii. Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Chirinjibi Nepal, SBI Banks chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri, jointly inaugurated the new service in Nepal.
iii. It will offer customers products like Savings Bank, Saral Bachat Account and Combo Savings Account and the branch will have facilities like kiosks for account opening, debit card printing and ATM.
iv. The digital banking unit also has a robot, which provides important information to customers in an interactive manner.
v. Under the Digital Village initiative, the NSBL has adopted Jaharsing Pauwa village to provide financial literacy centres and other banking facilities to the 2,200 villagers.

Ranveer, Prabhas in GQ’s Most Influential Young Indians list
Actor Ranveer Singh has featured in GQ’s Most Influential Young Indians 2017. ‘Baahubali’ actor Prabhas with other actors have featured in the Most Influential Young Indians  Artistes list by GQ India magazine.
i. The GQ Power List was out on 8th July.
ii. This year, the list includes individuals who have built companies and assembled fortunes – and none of them is older than 40.
iii. Some of the other names to feature in the list include Reliance business scion Akash Ambani, Lipstick Under My Burkha writer-director Alankrita Shrivastava, Amrita Pandey, vice president jof studios at Disney India, Amazon India head Nitesh Kripalani.
iv. It includes Young Indians from a diverse section of professions varying from business,  media food and drinks, entertainment, , sports and real estate among others.
v. GQ (formerly Gentlemen’s Quarterly) is an international monthly men’s magazine based in New York City. A.R. Rahman shortlisted for World Soundtrack Awards
Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman has been shortlisted for the World Soundtrack Awards for his upcoming film, Viceroy’s House.
i. It is a film directed by Gurinder Chadha, a British filmmaker of Sikh origin, “Viceroy’s House”
ii. All soundtrack and film music fans worldwide can cast their personal vote for the best soundtrack of the past 12 months.
iii. The World Soundtrack Academy (WSA, or World Soundtrack Awards), launched in 2001 by the Film Fest Gent. The event takes place yearly in Ghent, Belgium with the ceremony usually at the Capitole Concert Hall.

John Joseph to take charge as chief of GST intelligence agency
John Joseph has been appointed Director General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DG GSTI) on 9th of July 2017.
Key Points:
i. Joseph, a 1983 batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise), has worked in the Finance Ministry’s important departments, including the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
ii. The DG GSTI is the new name given to the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI).
iii. It is mandated to check service tax and central excise duty evasion.
iv. Mahajan has been given the additional charge of the DG GSTI till the joining of the new chief.
About GST
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect taxapplicable throughout India which replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and stategovernments.
♦ It was introduced as The Constitution 101 Amendment Act 2017 following the passage of Constitution 122nd Amendment Bill.
♦ The GST is governed by a GST Council and its Chairman is the Finance Minister of India.
♦ Under GST, goods and services are taxed at the following rates,  5%, 12% and 18%,28%

Queen Elizabeth hires first ever black assistant Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah
A new personal assistant selected by the Queen is to become the first black assistant who will serve as the first black equerry in British history. It has been announced on 9th of July 2017.
Key Notes:
.Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, a Ghanaian-born officer who fought in the Afghanistan war, will be the personal assistant of Queen Elizabeth.

. As an equerry, Major Twumasi-Ankrah will act as one of the Queen’s most-trusted attendants, assisting her with official engagements and welcoming high profile guests to royal residences.
iii. Major TA moved to the UK from Ghana with his parents in 1982.
iv. He studied at Queen Mary University in London and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Raninder Singh re-elected as NRAI President
Incumbent Raninder Singh was on 8th july, 2017 re-elected president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for a four-year term in Mohali. Raninder is the son of Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh.
i. The 48-year-old Singh, who represents Punjab in NRAI’s governing body, is an active trap shooter and has also participated in ISSF World Cups and National Championships.
ii. Raninder recorded a 89-1 margin over Shyam Singh Yadav, president of Uttar Pradesh Rifle Association.
iii. NRAI had recently taken cognizance of the 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on all imports, including duty-free imports.
iv. K N Singh Deo, was unanimously elected as senior vice president. Deo is a BJD MP from Odisha.

Atthaya Thitikul becomes youngest Ladies European Tour winner
Teenage Atthaya Thitikul became the youngest winner on the Ladies European Tour on 9th of July 2017.
Key Points:
i. Atthaya beat Ana Menendez of Mexico by two strokes.
ii. The Ladies European Tour held in Thailand at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club.
iii. At 14 years, four months and 19 days, Atthaya broke the previous record of the formerly top-ranked Lydia Ko, who at 14 years and eight months won her first professional event at the New South Wales Open in 2012.

OBITUARY

Former Bengal Cricketer Gour Ghosh passes away
Former Bengal and Jharkhand First-Class cricketer Gour Ghosh passed away on 9th of July 2017.He was 77 years of age.
Key Points
i. Gour was right-hand batsman and wicketkeeper.
ii. He played 17 First-Class matches in a career spanning 1960-61 to 1970-71.
iii. He was also a junior Bengal selector in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

‘True Blood’ actor Nelsan Ellis dead at 39
Actor Nelsan Ellis was best known for playing Lafayette Reynolds on the HBO series “True Blood,” has died at the age of 39.
Key Points:
i. Ellis died of heart failure on 8th of July 2017.
ii. The performance earned him a 2008 Satellite Award for best supporting actor and numerous awards alongside the cast of the show.
iii. Ellis was born in Harvey, Illinois US in 1978 and graduated from Julliard.
iv. In Julliard he won the Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award for his semi-autobiographical play “Ugly.”
