India has seen an improvement in overall life expectancy at birth to 69 years: SRS 2013-17
According to the Sample Registration Survey (SRS) for 2013-17 released by the Registrar General of India, the overall life expectancy at birth in India improved to 69 years from 68.7 years in 2012-16.

  • Men & Women life expectancy: As per SRS 2013-17, women are expected to live for 70.4 years and men for 67.8 years. In 2012-16, the life expectancy for women was 70.2 years and for men, it was 67.4 years.

First edition of helicopter summit 2019 by aviation ministry held in Dehradun
On September 8, 2019, the ministry of Aviation jointly with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organized the first helicopter summit 2019 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand to discuss the issues related to connectivity through helicopters. India announces $1 mn disaster relief aid for Bahamas as it is affected by Hurricane Dorian
On September 8, 2019, The Government of India (GoI) announced humanitarian assistance of $1 million as immediate disaster relief to help people in The Bahamas affected by Hurricane (tropical cyclone) Dorian which has caused large scale destruction. The death toll is more than 40 and is likely to increase.

Mumbai ranks 5th and New Delhi 11th in the 2019 Knight Frank Co-Living Index across Asia-Pacific, Beijing tops
On September 9, 2019, the Co-living index for the year 2019 titled “Insights on Co-living – An Asia-Pacific Perspective” across the Asia-Pacific region was released by London based consultancy agency Knight Frank. Among the Indian cities, Mumbai ranked at the 5th spot, New Delhi ranked at the 11th spot and the electronic city of India, Bengaluru ranked at the 19th spot in the index. The index was topped by Beijing (China) followed by Tokyo(Japan) and Shanghai(China) in the second and third position respectively.Key points
i. Ranking factor: The index was made on 6 key attributes namely, Tech & Financial Hub, housing affordability, University population, venture capital deals & growth, quality of life and general population & human development index. It has covered twenty major Asia-Pacific cities.

BANKING & FINANCE

IPPB launched AePS services 
On September 9, 2019, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has launched Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) Services at the first anniversary of its business operations. With this, IPPB became the single largest platform in the country for providing interoperable banking services to the customers of any bank including the 34 crore Jan Dhan account holders. Key Points:
i. With the help of AEPS services anyone with a bank account linked to Aadhaar can carry out basic banking services like cash withdrawals and balance enquiry irrespective of the bank they hold their account with. Thus, it will benefit the unbanked and underbanked customers and help in doorstep banking access to millions of underbanked customers.
ii. In August 2019, the transaction value of AePS stood at Rs. 10,034.12 crores.
iii. To avail these services, a customer with an Aadhaar linked account can authenticate his/her identity with fingerprint scan & Aadhaar authentication to complete a transaction.
About IPPB:
IPPB has been established under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communication with 100% equity owned by Government of India. It was launched by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on September 1, 2018. The fundamental mandate of IPPB is to remove barriers for the unbanked & underbanked and reach the last mile leveraging the Postal network comprising 155,000 Post Offices (135,000 in rural areas) and 300,000 Postal employees.

Rajiv Kumar appointed as the new MD of Microsoft India (R&D)
On September 9, 2019, the American multinational technology company Microsoft has appointed Rajiv Kumar as the new Managing Director(MD) of Microsoft India Research & Development (R&D) Private Ltd (MIRPL). Kumar, who is currently corporate vice president of the company’s Experiences and Devices (E+D) group, succeeds Anil Bhansali and will be relocating to Redmond, United States(US).Key points
i. Kumar’s key contributions are Kaizala (enterprise productivity chat app) & bootstrapping campus hiring programme in India.

Madras HC Chief Justice Vijaya K. Tahilramani resigns after the Meghalaya HC transfer
On September 7, 2019, the High Court Chief Justice(HC-CJ) of Madras, Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani resigned from her post after being transferred to Meghalaya HC. The resignation letter was handed over to the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind and copy of it to Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi.Key points
i. The resignation of Tahilramani who was appointed as the CJ of Madras in August 2018, comes after the reconsideration appeal of her transfer was rejected.
ii. AK Mittal, Meghalaya HC was announced to be transferred to the Madras HC in place of Tahilramani.

Overview of US Open 2019 held at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, United States 
US Open 2019, annual hard-court tennis competition, was held from August 26- September 8, 2019 at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, New York, United States (US) on 14 DecoTurf hard courts. It was the 139th edition of the tournament which was run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and was a part of the 2019 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour and the 2019 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour calendars under the Grand Slam category.i. It was the fourth and the last Grand Slam of 2019 hosted by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), other 3 being Australian Open, French Open & Wimbledon.
ii. The total prize money of the tournament was $57,238,700 where singles champions received $3,850,000 & doubles champions received $740,000.

iii. Rafael Nadal became the oldest tennis player since Rod Laver (Australia) in 1969 to reach all four Grand Slam semi-finals in a single season (2019). It was his 19th Grand Slam title and the 4th US Open title.
iv. Bianca Andreescu, aged 19, was the first teen US Open semi-finalist in a decade. She became the first teen to win a Grand Slam title since Maria Sharapova captured the 2006 US Open and became the youngest US Open champion since Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2004. She became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Charles Leclerc wins second successive F1 win through 2019 Italian Grand Prix 
On September 8, 2019 Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc(Monaco) has won the 2019 Italian Grand Prix(formally known as Formula 1 Gran Premio Heineken d’Italia 2019) Formula 1(F1) race at Monza, Italy. This marks Ferrari’s first Italian Grand Prix win in 9 years (last win 2010) and also Charles’s second successive win in the F1 race after winning the maiden 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.

i. Charles was followed by Mercedes’s Valtteri Bottas(Finland) and Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton(Britain) in the second and third place respectively.

SL cricketer Malinga takes double hat-trick, became 1st bowler with 5 int’l hat-tricks
On September 6, 2019, Sri Lanka cricket captain Lasith Malinga became the first bowler to take 100 wickets in the T20I (twenty-twenty International) format during a 3rd T20I match against New Zealand at Pallekele, Sri Lanka after which he also became the first-ever bowler to take a double hat-trick. Currently, Malinga is the only player with 5 limited-overs International hat-tricks. Records:

  • Malinga surpassed Wasim Akram(Pakistan) for most hat-tricks in international cricket where his first T20I hat-trick was taken in April 2017 against Bangladesh in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has 3 hat-tricks in One Day Internationals(ODI).
  • He is the only bowler in international cricket to have picked up 4 wickets in 4 balls twice. As after hat-trick in Pallekele he went on to pick up 4 wickets. He first achieved the feat in 2007 in an ODI against South Africa.

India Red wins 2019 Duleep Trophy at Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru
On September 7, 2019, India Red defeated India green by an innings and 38 runs to win the 2019 Duleep trophy held at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Akshay Wakhare (India red) of Vidarbha, Maharashtra took a 5 wicket haul leading to the team’s victory while Abhimanyu Easwaran(India red) was awarded player of the match title.

Brigid Kosgei of Kenya ran fastest half marathon ever by a woman in 2019 Great North Run in UK
On September 8, 2019 Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei created record in the 2019 Great North Run event held in the United Kingdom(UK) making the fastest half-marathon run ever by a woman by winning the event in 1hr 4min and 28 secs which is 23sec ahead of the 2017 world record set by Jocelyne Jepkosgei (Kenya).Britain’s Mo Farah, the 4-time Olympic champion(2012,2016), won the men’s elite race for a record sixth time in the event.Key points
Other winners:David Weir (Britain), the Paralympic wheelchair athlete won his 8th wheelchair title, while it is the second win for Jade Jones-Hall (UK) in the female wheelchair category.

IOC won 93rd All-India MCC Hockey Tournament for 2019 in Chennai by defeating PNB
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) defeated Punjab National Bank (PNB) by 3-1 and clinched the 93rd All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament title for the year 2019 held at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.i. Gurjinder Singh (2) & Deepak Thakur scored the goals for IOC and Vishal Antil scored the goal for PNB.
ii. The trophy was handed over to the IOC by Murugappa Group Chairman M M Murugappan. Winners received Rs 6 lakhs, runner-ups received Rs 3.5 lakhs and best forward, best midfielder, best goalkeeper, most promising player of the tournament & man of the match of finals received Rs 10,000 & a high end bicycle, each.
iii. MCC Hockey tournament is the second oldest tournament in India, first being Beighton Cup in Kolkata, West Bengal.

OBITUARY

Freedom fighter Heeralal Sharma passes away 
On September 6, 2019 Rajasthan born freedom fighter of India, Heeralal Sharma passed away at the age of 95 due to old age ailments at a government hospital in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

i. Heeralal actively participated in the freedom movement and was jailed for two years.

Book titled ‘Fortune Turners: The Quartet that spun India to glory’ on spin quartet written by Aditya Bhushan and Sachin Bajaj was launched in New Delhi. It is published by Global Cricket School.i. It reveals the careers of the famous four spinners of Indian cricket team- Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrashekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, who dominated Indian bowling in the 1960s-70s and were instrumental in some of the team’s famous victories of the time.
ii. The launch ceremony was attended by former Indian cricketers Kapil Dev & Bishan Singh Bedi along with the authors.

Himalaya day 2019 celebrated on September 9
Himalaya Day 2019 was observed on September 9. It was celebrated in the Biotech Auditorium of the Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. It was first celebrated in the year 2010.

SIWI organised 2019 World water week observed in Stockholm, Sweden from 25th to 30th August
Week-long conference on global water issues, the 2019 World Water Week organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute(SIWI) was observed in Stockholm, Sweden from 25 to 30 August with the theme “Water for society – Including all”. Dr. Jackie King was awarded the 2019 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate during the conference for her contribution to global river management.
Key points
i. Agenda: Form partnerships, discuss water stress issues, review implementation thus by overall improving the health, livelihood and poverty reduction.
ii. Participants: The conference was attended by 4,000 participants from 138 countries globally. The Indian representatives were Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, the Director-General(DG) of National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)
iii. Address by India: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat addressed the event during the session titled ‘High-level dialogue: Building a Resilient Future through Water’. The Women + Water Alliance, initiated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US-based apparel company Gap Inc is planning to increase its social activities in India to provide more support to 2 lakh women in minimizing water woes. At present, the project is assisting women in textile and cotton hubs of India, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
iv. Namami Gange mission:  A pavilion on the Namami Gange’ mission was set up during the conference.
v. Mission Paani: The Jal minister launched ‘Mission Paani’ global campaign in Stockholm. It was launched in Mumbai, India on September 7, 2019 by News 18 and Reckitt Benckiser hygiene home product company’s brand Harpic along with Bollywood actor Amitabh Bhachan (campaign ambassador).
vi. Closing ceremony: Drinking water and Sanitation department secretary Parameswaran Iyer (Retired Indian Administrative Service(IAS) Officer) who resigned his job to head India’s cleanliness drive ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ concluded at the closing ceremony of the conference about India’s massive undertaking for access to clean water and safe sanitation before 2024.

Odia writer Pradeep Dash wins 40th Sarala Puraskar award for 2019
On September 7, 2019, noted Odia poet Pradeep Dash was selected for the 40th edition of 2019 Sarala Puraskar award for his poetry work Charu Chibar O Charjya. The award which is the foremost literary honour in Odisha comprises of a citation with a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and will be presented on October 26, 2019, by the governor of Odisha Shri Ganeshi Lal.
Key points
i. Other awardees: Apart from Pradeep, two more notable personalities namely Pandit Harmohan Khuntia and Lalat Mohan Patnaik will be honoured for their contribution in the field of music and art. While Harmohan would be honoured with ‘Ila Panda Sangeet Samman’, Lalat would be honoured with ‘Ila Panda Chitrakala Samman’, each with a cash prize of Rs 1,50,000 and citations.
ii. Sarala Puraskar: This award is instituted in 1979 by Odia industrialist Late Bansidhar Panda and Late Ila Panda and is awarded by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) which is the charitable wing of Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Limited (IMFA Ltd).
iii.Other award by IMPaCT: IMPaCT also felicitates Ekalabya Puraskar for sports talents of Odisha.

Justice Vikram Nath designated as the new Chief Justice of Gujarat HC
On September 8, 2019, The Department of Justice in the Union Law Ministry appointed Justice Vikram Nath as the new Gujarat High Court (HC) Chief Justice succeeding Justice Anant Surendraray Dave who was the acting chief justice of the Gujarat HC as Gujrat HC had been without a regular chief justice since November 2018 as the then Chief Justice R S Reddy was elevated to the Supreme Court (SC).
i. Currently, he is posted as a judge in the Allahabad High Court. He has been appointed by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India.
ii. In 1987, he practised in the Allahabad HC & was elevated as Additional Judge on 24 September, 2004 and took oath as permanent judge on 27 February 2006.

Anupriya Lakra becomes first Woman Pilot from Odisha’s maoist-hit Malkangiri district
Anupriya Lakra, aged 27, a tribal woman from Odisha’s Maoist-hit Malkangiri district (tribal area) has become the first female pilot from the backward region. She will join a private airline as a co-pilot.i. She completed her matriculation from a convent school in Malkangiri, higher secondary from a school in Semiliguda & joined the Pilot Training Institute in Bhubaneswar in 2012.

Senior Journalist Dilip Satpathy from Cuttack, Odisha passed away 
On September 9, 2019, Senior journalist Dilip Satpathy, aged 56, from Cuttack, Odisha passed away. The bone marrow cancer had relapsed him 3 years ago.i. He started his career as a reporter in a city-based English daily and become the Resident Editor of the Bhubaneswar edition of Business Standard.
ii. He was also associated with journalism schools in Bhubaneswar.
