5th Indian International Science Festival 2019 to be held in Kolkata   
The Union Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences and Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan announced to organise the 5th edition of the Indian International Science Festival (IISF) in Kolkata, West Bengal from November 5 to 8. The theme for 2019 is “RISEN India – Research, Innovation, and Science Empowering the Nation”. The event will be held at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Science City, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Bose Institute and Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in Kolkata.5th Indian International Science FestivalKey points
i. Aim: The aim of this festival is to celebrate India’s scientific and technological advancements with the participation of students, innovators, scientists, craftsmen, and farmers.

Overview of United Nations Climate Action Summit 2019 held at UN Headquarters in New York, United States
The United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit 2019 was held in the General Assembly Hall of the UN Headquarters in New York, United States on September 23, 2019.

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was conferred with the prestigious ‘Vaccine Hero’ award 2019 in recognition of the country’s outstanding success in vaccination

23rd edition of “Malabar 2019” naval joint exercise of India, US and Japan commenced at Sasebo, Japan
On September 25, 2019 the 23rd edition of the trilateral maritime exercise of India, Japan and the United States(US) named “Malabar 2019” exercise begun at Sasebo, Japan.Key points:
i. Indian participation: India fields 6,100-tonne stealth frigate Indian Navy Ship(INS) Sahyadri, anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kiltan along with first time deployment of Poseidon-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft.
ii. US & Japan participation: The United States fields Arleigh Burke-class destroyer United States Ship (USS) McCampbell, amphibious warship USS Green Bay and a Los Angeles class nuclear fast attack submarine, while Japan fields 27,000-tonne Izumo-class helicopter carrier JS Kaga, destroyer Samidare and cruiser Chokai.
iii. Maritime patrol Aircraft deployment: The three nations are deploying their maritime patrol aircraft equipped with radars, missiles and torpedoes as anti-submarine warfare is the important element in Malabar exercise.
About Malabar exercise:
It originally began as a bilateral exercise in 1992 between India and US, until Japan joined as a permanent member in 2015.

ADB cuts India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.5% from 7% for FY 2019-20
On September 25, 2019, The Manila-headquartered Asian Development Bank (ADB) in its Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2019 update cut India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth to 6.5% from 7% for FY 2019-20 after the growth slowed down to 5% in the Q1 April–June FY 2019-20 which is a six-year low in the first quarter.Key Points:
i. The reasons for the decline are an unexpected decline in manufacturing and investment, subdued lending by banks and other financial institutions, stress in the rural economy, and a weakening external outlook.
ii. It predicted that India is expected to rebound to 7.2% growth in the FY 2020-21.
iii. South Asia’s growth forecasts are lowered to 6.2% for 2019 and 6.7% for 2020.

According to the IIFL (India Infoline Finance Limited) Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2019, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) emerged as the richest person in India with a wealth of Rs 3.8 lakh crore for the eighth straight year.Key Points:
i. London based SP Hinduja and family (Rs 1.86 lakh crore), Wipro founder Azim Premji (Rs 1.17 lakh crore), LN Mittal, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ArcelorMittal (Rs 1.07 lakh crore) secured the second, third and fourth positions respectively.
ii. Ritesh Agarwal, aged 25, of Oyo Rooms with the net worth of Rs 7,500 crore is the youngest self made entrepreneur.
iii. The wealthiest person under 40 years (age) is Divyank Turakhia (37) of Media.net.
iv. Roshni Nadar (37) of HCL (Hindustan Computers Limited) technologies emerged as the richest woman followed by Smita V Crishna (68) of Godrej Group with a net worth of Rs 31,400 crore.
v. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon emerged as the richest self-made woman in India with a net worth of Rs 18,500 crore.
vi. The list evaluated the wealth status of 953 individuals.
vii. The list had entrants from 63 cities and Mumbai had the largest number of entrants with 246, followed by New Delhi (175) and Bengaluru (77).

A 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg wins 2019 Right Livelihood Award
On September 23, 2019, Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg (16), has been awarded with Sweden’s Alternative Nobel Prize called “Right Livelihood Award 2019” for prompting and amplifying political demands, scientific facts for immediate climate action in Stockholm, Sweden.Key points:
i. She has shared the award with Brazilian Indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa of the Yanomami people, and the Hutukara Yanomami Association (Brazil), women’s rights lawyer Guo Jianmei (China) and human rights defender Aminatou Haidar (Western Sahara) .
ii. Each awardee has received 1 million SEK- Swedish krona (94,000 EUR).
iii. Thunberg lashed out at all the leaders of the world during her speech at the United Nations Summit at the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States (US) on september 23, 2019.
Right Livelihood Award
It is an international award to “honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us at present. The prize was established in 1980 by German-Swedish philanthropist Jakob von Uexkull and is presented annually.
The Right Livelihood Foundation has presented this award.
Greta Thunberg
She is best known for initiating a movement, “Fridays for Future”, a climate movement that formed in November 2018.
She began protesting outside the Swedish parliament about the need for immediate action to combat climate change in August 2018.
In March 2019, three members of the Norwegian parliament nominated Thunberg for the Nobel Peace Prize.

UK mathematician Adam Harper wins the 2019 SASTRA Ramanujan prize 
On September 25, 2019 mathematician and assistant professor of the University of Warwick, England, Adam Harper, from the United Kingdom(UK) won the SASTRA Ramanujan prize for 2019. He will be awarded with a citation and an award of $10,000. The award is given to people under the age of 32 working in the area influenced by mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Key points
i. The Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA)-Ramanujan award was first instituted in 2005 by SASTRA University. The previous awardees were Manjul Bhargava and Akshay Venkatesh where they later went on to win the Fields Medal awarded to mathematicians.
ii. The award will be given every year on the birth anniversary of Ramanujam i.e. December 22, by SASTRA University.

India’s former athlete PT Usha honoured with Veteran Pin by IAAF in 52nd IAAF Congress in Doha, Qatar
On September 25, 2019, Indian track and field former athlete PT Usha was presented with Veteran Pin by the world athletics governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), in recognition of her contribution to the growth of sport. The award was given by IAAF chief Sebastian Coe at the 52nd IAAF Congress held in Doha, Qatar.Key points
i. Familiarly known as ‘Payyoli Express’ and ‘queen of track and field’, PT Usha was one among the three persons from Asia to receive the Veteran Pin.

Amitabh Bachchan unanimously selected for Dadasaheb Phalke award 2019 
On September 24, 2019 the Union minister of information and broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar announced that Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan was selected for the 2019 Dadasaheb Phalke award which is the highest award in Indian cinema. It is conferred to a person for his/her lifetime achievement in cinema. He will be presented with a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh during the award presentation.Key points
Previous achievements: Amitabh previously was awarded the Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He was also conferred the France’s highest civilian honour, ‘the Knight of the Legion of Honour’ by the French govt. in 2007.

Sebastian Coe re-appointed as IAAF chief and Adille Sumariwalla re-elected as member of its council
On September 25, 2019, Britain’s Sebastian Coe was re-elected as the chief of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) for a second term. A former Olympic and world champion, Coe was previously elected as the head of IAAF in 2015. On the other hand, President of Athletics Federation of India, Adille Sumariwalla also re-elected as member of the Council of IAAF for a second four-year term.

i. During his first term as the IAAF chief, Coe had set up Athletics Integrity Unit that serves as watchdog in cleaning sport corruptions. The appointment has been made during the 52nd IAAF Congress at Doha, Qatar.

Defence Minister Mr Rajnath Singh commissions ICGS Varaha at the Chennai Port Trust
On September 25, 2019, Defence Minister of India, Mr Rajnath Singh commissioned Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varaha at the Chennai Port Trust, Tamil Nadu in the presence of ICG Director General (DG) Krishnaswamy Natarajan and others. It is the fourth in the series of seven 98-m Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Mr Singh had also participated in the Investiture Ceremony of Coast Guard in Chennai.

NASA successfully launches RamanSat 2, a miniature satellite made by Indian student Aabhaas Sikka
On September 23, 2019, An independent space agency of the United States(US) , NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has successfully launched a miniature satellite called “RamanSat 2” made by a 17-year old New Delhi-based Indian student Aabhaas Sikka ,from NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in New Mexico, US and achieved an altitude of 38 km.Key points:
i.
The minisatellite (measures 4 cm x 4 cm x 4 cm) designed by Sikka during his internship with SPACE-India (an organisation working in the field of astronomy, space education and technology) with help from Sachin Bahmba, Founder and CMD (Chief Managing Director) of SPACE Group, as well as the SPACE-India’s research team.
ii. With the help of its state-of-the-art equipment, the satellite measure the radiation from the sun and space to make space exploration safer for humans and satellites.
iii. RamanSat 2 came after the success of Kalam Sat, named after former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam, and made by an Indian high school team (Chennai, Tamil Nadu) that attended in 2017 in this same programme.

Agri minister Narendra Singh Tomar launches CHC Farm Machinery and Krishi Kisan App in New Delhi 
On September 24, 2019, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar launched 2 mobile apps named CHC Farm Machinery and Krishi Kisan App for geotagging purposes in New Delhi for easy access of technical agricultural equipments at farmers’ doorstep.Key points
i. CHC Farm Machinery App: Narendra Singh Tomar launched the CHC Farm Machinery App for the farmers to connect with the Custom Hiring Centers(CHC) located within 50 km radius. So far, more than 40,000 custom hiring service centers have been registered on this mobile app with over 1,20,000 agricultural machineries & equipment rented. This app is already available to the custom service provides for registration and uploading purposes.
ii. Krishi Kisan App: Through this app, farmer will be provided with information about high-yielding crops and seeds in their nearby area. It helps in geo-tagging and geo-fencing of crop and also gives weather forecast messages to farmers. Both the apps are available in the Google Play Store for android devices.
iii. CHC/ Farm Machinery banks: Hi tech hubs, CHC and farm machinery banks are established under various schemes like Sub –Mission on Agricultural Mechanization, RashtriyaKrishiVikasYojana and Crop Residue Management Schemes of the Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare(DAC&FW) under Agriculture and Farmers welfare ministry. These hubs provide farm equipment on a rental basis.

Home minister Amit Shah launches private security agency licensing portal in New Delhi
On September 25, 2019, the Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah launched ‘Private Security Agency Licensing Portal’ in New Delhi in order to help in reducing formalities in getting a license to the private security agencies. Information such as no. of licensed agencies will also be available in the portal in order to prevent fraudulent activities. This portal will be regulated under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005.
Key points
i. This portal will also help people in cross-checking police verification of all security guard and will be made available in languages like Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu and Tamil within 3 months. Currently, Gujarat has highest number of agencies (2249), followed by Maharashtra 1309.

Overview of 36th edition of Toray Pan Pacific Open 2019 held in Osaka, Japan  
The 36th edition of Toray Pan Pacific Open 2019 professional women’s tennis tournament was held at Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan from September 16 – 22, 2019. The event which was a part of the Premier Series of the 2019 Women’s Tennis Association(WTA) Tour had a total prize money of $823,000.

i. Women’s singles: Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka won the women’s singles title by defeating Netherlands tennis player Kiki Bertens. Naomi became the first Japanese to win the Pan Pacific Open since Kimiko Date in 1995.
ii. Women’s doubles: Taiwanese tennis players Latisha Chan and Chan Hao-ching won the women’s doubles title by defeating Taiwanese players Hsieh Su-wei and Hsieh Yu-chieh.

Manipur wins 25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh
On September 24, 2019, defending champion Manipur won the 25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship held at CHF Ground in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh by defeating Railways. This marks Manipur’s 20th championship title in the game. Key points
i. Bala Devi of Manipur was the highest scorer in the tournament with 20 goals while Railways’ Sanju emerged as the Player of the tournament. Manipur goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu was honoured with best goalkeeper award.
ii. Organised by the All India Football Federation(AIFF), this is the first time Arunachal Pradesh hosted National Football Championship.

Overview of 20th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship for 2019 held in Tehran, Iran
The 20th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship for 2019 was held in Tehran, Iran from September 13–21, 2019. The biennial tournament was organised by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) with Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF). It was held in 2 venues namely Azadi Indoor Stadium and Azadi Volleyball Hall, both located within the Azadi Sport Complex, Tehran, Iran.Key Points:
i. The host nation, Iran emerged as champions by defeating Australia in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-21). It was their third title.

OBITUARY

An active mountain skier, Davo Karnica of Slovenia passes away
Davo Karnicar of Slovenia , the 1st person who ski down Mount Everest on October 7, 2000, has passed away in the tree cutting accident in his mountainous home region of Zgornje Jezersko, in northern Slovenia. He was 56.i. Born on 26 October 1962, Zgornje Jezersko, Slovenia, he had skied down the highest mountains in each of the other six continents. The other Summits descents were

  • Kilimanjaro (5895 m) in Africa in November 2001
  • Mount Elbrus (5642 m) in Europe in May 2002
  • Aconcagua (6960 m) in South America in January 2003

Antyodaya Diwas Day 2019 observed on September 25
Antyodaya Diwas Day was observed on September 25, 2019, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, a noted philosopher, historian, and political activist. Antyodaya means uplifting of the weakest section of the society.
Key Points:
i. He was the coordinator and famous leader of the Jan Sangh, which is considered a precursor to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
ii. He was the founder of Rashtra Dharma Prakashan publishing house in Lucknow and launched Rashtra Dharma, a monthly magazine. He also launched weekly Panchjanya and daily Swadesh. He has written a drama on Chandragupta Maurya in Hindi and a biography of Shankaracharya.
iii. He was found dead in mysterious circumstances, and his body was found on 11 February 1968 on a railway track near Mughalsarai Junction railway station, Uttar Pradesh. In 2018, the railway station was renamed in his honour.
iv. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Skill development Dr Mahendranath Pandey paid homage to the leader and various functions were organised in different parts of India.
v. In Uttar Pradesh, senior BJP leaders and party workers held different public welfare initiatives including Swachhta campaign, plastic free India campaign and environmental protection initiatives.

World Pharmacists day observed on September 25, 2019
On September 25, 2019, World Pharmacists Day was observed all over the world.The aim of this day is to promote and spread awareness about the pharmacist’s (health professionals who practice in pharmacy) key role in improving health in every part of the world.The theme for the year 2019 is “Safe and effective medicines for all”.Key points:

Senior bureaucrat Nirmal chandra mishra appointed as the chairman of the Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC)
On September 23, 2019, Senior bureaucrat & present director of the tourism department, Nirmal Chandra Mishra, has been appointed as the chairman of the Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC). He will succeed Major General Bhabani Shankar Das, as he completes his term a few days back.i. Mishra also holds the additional charge of managing director (MD), Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC).

Assam launches of 3 public welfare schemes called ‘Aponar Apon Ghar’, ‘Abhinandan’ & ‘Free Drugs Scheme for 651 Tea Garden Hospitals’
On September 24, 2019, The Assam state Government has launched twin schemes for the public welfare called ‘Aponar Apon Ghar Scheme’(a home loan subsidy scheme), ‘Abhinandan’ (an Education Loan Subsidy scheme), and Free Drugs Scheme for 651 Tea Garden Hospitals.Key points:
i. Aponar Apon Ghar: It is an upgraded version of the previous Apun Ghar home loan subsidy scheme, which will provide a subsidy of up to Rs 2.5 lakh on home loans up to Rs 40 lakh to all citizens of the state.

Abhinandan:  It is an Education Loan Subsidy scheme, under this every student in the state of assam having active education loan account regardless of the amount for pursuing higher education can get benefitted. The Assam government will provide a one-time subsidy of up to Rs 50,000 to all educational loans.

iii. Free Drugs Scheme for 651 Tea Garden Hospitals – Under this scheme, 142 essential drugs, 47 surgical items, 45 consumables/linens and 6 numbers of disinfectants would be provided free of cost to the 651 tea garden hospitals of the state. An amount of Rs 20 crore would be spent every year on the scheme. The scheme is for the patients of the tea tribe community.
