An inter-ministerial panel sanctioned 5,645 electric buses in 65 cities
On July 29, 2019, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amitabh Kant announced that an inter-ministerial panel for Electric Vehicles (EVs) sanctioned 5645 electric buses for operations in 65 cities and for inter-city operations to 8 state transport undertakings.
Key Points:
i. The Centre has approved Rs 10,000 crore under the FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles) scheme.
ii. Niti Aayog has proposed that after March 31, 2025 only electric two-wheelers below the capacity of 150cc should be sold in India and after March 31, 2023 three-wheelers sold in the country should be electric.

Centre aims to achieve 100% digitization of waqf properties in 100 days
On July 29,2019, Union Minister of Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi stated that the Centre government has set a target to achieve “100% Digitization of Waqf properties across country in its 1st 100 days” at the National Conference of State and Union Territories Waqf Boards organized by the Central Waqf Council, held in New Delhi. He also awarded 8 ”mutawalis” under the “Qaumi Waqf Board Taraqqiati Scheme” for better management of waqf properties.
Key points:
i. GIS/GPS: Geographic Information System (GIS)/ Global Positioning System(GPS) mapping are being used on a war footing with the help of IIT Roorkee and the Aligarh Muslim University to achieve the target.
ii. Aim: To improve the infrastructural and financial conditions of waqf boards so that waqf properties can be used for the welfare of the Muslim community, and encroachment of such properties be prevented.
iii. Present status: There are over 6 lakh registered waqf properties across the country.
iv. PMJVK: This is the 1st time the Government providing 100 % funding to develop various educational and developmental programs on waqf land under Pradhanmantri Jan Vikas Karykram (PMJVK).
Waqf properties:
Literally, waqf means endowment of moveable or immovable property by Muslims for the welfare of the poor and the needy and for maintaining properties dedicated to mosques, tombs, orphanages, shrines and the like. The waqif (settler), in his deed, appoints a mutawalli (custodian of waqf properties) for the administration of the waqf.

DOM led by MoES to commence by October 31, 2019
Union government has approved the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) of the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) which will begin by October 31, 2019. It is a 5 year mission with the estimated cost of Rs 8000 crore which will explore the deepest recesses of the ocean.
Key Points:
i. The blueprint of the mission was unveiled by the MoES.
ii. The mission will explore for the metals and minerals and for this project, India has been allotted a site of 75,000 sq. km. in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) by the United Nations International Sea Bed Authority for exploitation of polymetallic nodules (PMN).
iii. As per the estimates, 380 million metric tonnes of polymetallic nodules are available at the bottom of the seas in the Central Indian Ocean.
iv. The project proposes offshore desalination plant which will work with tidal energy and develop a submersible vehicle that can go to a depth of at least 6,000 metres with three people on board.

India signs MoU with Myanmar on defense co-operation in New Delhi
On July 29,2019, India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Myanmar on defence co-operation in New Delhi after the 2 sides(Minister of State for Defence, Shripad Yesso Naik and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of Myanmar, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing) held talks on issues including reviewing joint exercises and training provided to Myanmar Defence Services in India, strengthening maritime security through joint surveillance and developing new infrastructure.
i. Myanmar is a key support of India’s Act East Policy towards prioritizing relations with its East Asian neighbors.
ii. The two countries in the past co-operated more closely on matters of security. Myanmar’s army has joined forces with the Indian army on several occasions to eliminate anti-India insurgent groups targeting India’s northeast from bases inside Myanmar.
iii. The troops of India & Myanmar jointly launched an assault on Arakan Army, (an insurgent group) which threatened an important connectivity project between the two sides.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Mozambique
Hon’ble Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh visited Mozambique from july 28-30 2019.This is the first official visit of Rajnath Singh as a Defence Minister to the African country as well as it is the first time ever a defence minister of India has visited Mozambique.
i. A Ceremony was held at the Mozambican naval headquarters to hand over Two India made Fast Interceptor Boats (FIBs) to the Mozambican navy where four members from Indian Coast Guard System (ICGS) team will be assisting with training and maintenance and operating the two boats.

According to the latest “Women Entrepreneur Cities Index 2019”, sponsored by Dell and conducted by London-based global information provider, IHS Markit, Singapore tops in Asian city ranked at 21st position, while Indian cities Bengaluru(Karnataka) and Delhi were ranked 43rd (7th in Asia) and 50th (10th in Asia) respectively.

India & China review situation in the borders areas ahead of Xi Jinping’s visit
On July 29,2019, India & China reviewed the situation in the border areas and progress made in productive implementation of confidence-building measures to improve the relations between their troops on the ground ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India to hold 2nd informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Key points:
i. The 2 sides hold 14th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs in Beijing, China on July 29,2019.
ii. They took note of regular exchanges at the troops level and at the diplomatic level, including under the WMCC framework, for maintaining peace in the border areas, which is important for the smooth development of bilateral relations was acknowledged by both sides.
iii. WMCC: It was established as an institutional mechanism in 2012 for consultation and coordination for the management of India-China border areas and also to exchange views on strengthening communication and cooperation.
iv. The two countries have 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) between them & so far they held 21 rounds of Special Representatives talks to resolve the border dispute.

Pakistan opens historic 1,000-year-old Hindu temple in Punjab for worship after 72 years
On the demand of the local Hindu community, Pakistan opened Shawala Teja Singh Temple in eastern city Sialkot for worship for the first time since partition. According to the book ‘History of Sialkot’ by the late Rashid Niaz, the temple is 1,000-years-old.

India’s renewable energy cost is lowest in Asia Pacific region -Wood Mackenzie
UK consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie stated that renewable energy cost of India is the lowest in the Asia Pacific region, due to the fact that Levelized Cost Of Electricity (LCOE) using solar photovoltaic of India has Fallen to $38 per Megawatt hour in 2019. This fall in LCOE is cheaper than the coal-fired power generation of 14% which is traditionally the cheapest source of power generation.
i. Woodmax’s director Alex whitworth said that India is the second-largest country in terms of power market in the Asia Pacific having a Power capacity of 421 Gigawatts(GW) and also the Solar capacity its expected to reach 38 GW in 2019
ii. India aims to have 175 GW capacity of renewable power installed in the country by 2022.
iii. The firm also announced that the second major lowest renewable cost generator, Australia will see cost-competitive solar power against coal production in 2020.
LCOE
It represents the average revenue per unit of electricity generated that would be required to recover the costs of building and operating a generating plant during a particular financial cycle
WoodMac further added that, in the past three years, solar LCOE has fallen 42% and is expected to reach $48/MWh in 2020 and would thus would beat all it fossil fuel competitors.

Reliance Jio becomes the largest telecom company of India with 331.3 million subscribers overtaking Vodafone Idea whose customer base stood at 320 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2019.
i. Airtel moved to the third position and the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) stood at the fourth position.
ii. Vodafone Idea’s mobile phone users stood at 334.1 million in the quarter ended March 31, 2019.
Rs.1500 crore deal signed by India and Russia to acquire Russia’s R-27
India signed a Rs 1500 crore contract with Russia for the acquisition of R-27air-to-air missile which gives the additional capability to target enemy aircraft at long Ranges.
These missiles are to be equipped on the Su-30MKI combat aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF)
R-27 missile
It is a medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile developed by Russia for its MIG and Sukhoi fighter jets.
The army has acquired these missiles under 10-I projects to maintain critical weapon systems and spares for a special minimum period. This special period is known as the War Wastage Reserve (WWR).
Emergency procurement
So far the Indian Air Force has spent around ₹7600 crore for procurement of missiles like Spice 2000, Ataka ATGMs etc under emergency procurement.
The emergency procurement has increased after the Pulwama attack in order to safeguard the borders with Pakistan.
Under the emergency procurement route, the security forces can buy equipment of their choice within 3 months at a cost of up to Rs. 300crore per case.

After West Bengal, Odisha gets GI tag for its sweet version of Rasagola
On July 29,2019, The Registrar of Geographical Indications(GI), Chennai has awarded a GI certificate registering the sweetmeat as ”Odisha Rasagola” to the state of Odisha which will be valid till Feb 22, 2028. In 2017, West Bengal had secured the GI tag for ”Banglar Rosogolla” after a tug of war with Odisha since 2015 over the origin of the sweet.
i. Records: The eastern state of Odisha claimed its GI tag by submitting history old documents stated that Rasagola” has been a part of the state’s centuries-old rituals performed for Lord Jagannath and found its mention in a 15th century Odia epic ”Dandi Ramayana”.
ii. Registration: The GI registration was conferred to ‘Odisha Rasagola’ under Section 16(I) or of authorized Section 17(3)(c) of Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999. The GI number 612 has been registered in favor of the Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC Ltd), a government of Odisha undertaking and Utkal Mistanna Byabasayee Samiti, a traders’ organization.
iii. Specialty: Odisha Rasagola made of chhena (cottage cheese) cooked in sugar syrup, which is very soft to feel, is juicy and non- chewy in consistency and without teeth pressure it can be swallowed.
iv. Color Theory: Odisha Rasagolas’, white in color with a round shape (non‐ spherical) are very specific, where without the addition of external color, various intensely-colored rasagolas are prepared using the principle of caramelization of sugar with specific methods of preparation.

Israel and the US successfully tested Arrow-3 Anti-Ballistic Missile System
On July 28, 2019, Israel’s Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Benjamin Netanyahu informed that Israel and the United States (US) successfully conducted tests of the advanced anti-ballistic missile system “Arrow-3″. The test was carried out with U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) at Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska (PSCA) in Kodiak, Alaska, US.
i. Arrow-3 is jointly manufactured by the Boeing Company and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and is intended to serve as Israel’s highest-altitude missile interception system.
ii. It is designed by IAI. It passed its first full interception test over the Mediterranean sea in 2015 and was deployed in Israel in 2017.

Scientists from IIT Hyderabad developed an eco-friendly solar cell using kumkum dye- DSSC
Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad developed low-cost, environment-friendly solar cells named Dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC) by employing an off-the-shelf dye used to make kumkum or vermilion.
Key Points:
i. DSSC is based on New Fuchsin (NF) dye with aqueous electrolyte and platinum-free counter electrodes. DSSC consists of three components: A monolayer of dye molecule adsorbed on semiconductor material, titanium dioxide (TiO2) deposited on transparent conductive oxides, like indium tin oxide (ITO) and a liquid electrolyte with an excess of electrons.
ii. The research was published in the Solar Energy Journal.
iii. The research was led by Professor Sai Santosh Kumar Raavi from the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad.
Indigenously built LCU MK IV class ship “LCU L56” commissioned into Indian Navy
Considered as a way of becoming self-reliant through indigenisation under “Make In India” objective, Vice Admiral, Atul Kumar Jain, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, commissioned the Land Craft Utility (LCU)MK IV class ships LCU L56 at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
i. This sixth of the LCU MK IV class ships, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), will be used for deployment and recovery of Main Battle Tanks, armoured vehicles, Troops and equipment from ship to shore and vice versa.
ii. The ship, managed by a team of 4 officers and 56 sailors will later be placed at Andaman and Nicobar Command at Port Blair.

22 species of flora and fauna gone extinct in the past few centuries in India
The wildlife survey organizations namely Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and International Union for Conservation Of Nature report was submitted by the Ministry of environment forest and climate change in Lok sabha stating that four species of fauna and 18 species of flora have gone extinct in India which is home to 11.5% of flora in the world.
i. Among mammals cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), pink headed duck (Rhodonessa caryophyllacea) and Himalayan quail (Ophrysia supercilious) have gone extinct.
ii. Among the 18 species of plants consisting of 4 non-flowering and 14 flowering plants, the notable ones which have gone extinct are Lastreopsis watti (a fern in Manipur) and three species from genus Ophiorrhiza.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),since 1750 more than double the number of plants in India have disappeared from the wild than birds, mammals and amphibians combined

ICC officially launches WTC
On July 29, 2019, International Cricket Council (ICC) officially launched the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC). It will begin from August 1, 2019, where Australia and England will face each other in the Ashes. It will bring relevance and context to bilateral Test cricket over the next 2 years (2021).
i. WTC will comprise of the top 9 Test teams of the world- Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
ii. 71 Test matches will be played across 27 series over two years. The top two teams will contest in the ICC World Test Championship final from June 14-20, 2021 in the United Kingdom (UK).
iii. Points will be given for grabs during each match. Each team will play three home and three away series.
iv. Each series will count for 120 points, distributed over the number of matches in a series.
v. The matches will be played in the same format as bilateral series.
vi. The number of matches in each series can vary between a minimum of two matches to a maximum of five matches.
viii. The first cycle of the WTC consists of only five-day matches and will include day-night matches.

Overview of President’s Cup Boxing Tournament 2019
The 23rd President’s Cup Boxing Tournament for the year 2019 was held from July 22-29, 2019 in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It was organized by the city of Labuan Bajo and the Indonesian Boxing Association. The Indian boxers finished their campaign with 9 medals- 7 gold and 2 silver and bagged ‘Best Team’ award.
i. The six-time world champion MC Mary Kom, aged 36, (51kg) defeated Australia’s April Franks by 5-0 and won gold for India.
ii. 2018 World Championships bronze winner Simranjit Kaur (60kg) also won gold by defeating Indonesia’s Asian Games bronze medallist Hasanah Huswatun by 5-0.
iii. In 54kg, Assam’s Jamuna Boro defeated Italy’s Giulia Lamagna by 5-0 and clinched gold.
iv. In 48kg, Monika won gold by defeating Endang of Indonesia.
v. Among the men, 2017 Ulaanbaatar Cup gold medallist Ankush Dahiya (64kg), 2017 Simon Prestige Memorial tournament bronze medallist Neeraj Swami (49kg) and Ananta Pralhad Chopade (52kg) won gold medals for India.

Tamil Nadu teenager J Jerlin Anika(15) has bagged 4 medals(1 gold,2 silver,1 bronze) in the 2nd World Deaf Youth Badminton Championships 2019 held in Taipei, Taiwan.
ii. The World Deaf Badminton Championships are organized by International Committee of Sports for the Deaf since 2003. They are held every four years.
iii. She won the two silver medals in the doubles and mixed doubles events in the Under-18 category.
iv. Anika is a 10th standard student in the Ouvaiyar government in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She was a national champion among the women hearing impaired badminton players.
Former SC judge AK Sikri appointed as Ombudsman officer of Indian Federation of Sports Gaming

On July 26, 2019, Veteran actor Russi Taylor, who voiced Disney’s Minnie Mouse for more than 30 years, passed away in Glendale, California, US. She was 75. Born on May 4, 1944, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she became the voice of Minnie Mouse in 1986.
i. She voiced for Martin Prince in The Simpsons, the cartoon character Strawberry Shortcake, Donald Duck’s nephews- Huey, Dewey and Louie, in the original “Ducktales” animated series and filled roles in “TaleSpin” and “Kim Possible.”

In order to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and promotion and protection of their rights, the UN General Assembly designated July 30 as the World Day Against Trafficking In Persons. The theme for 2019 is “Human Trafficking: call your government to action”
i. People trafficked in own country has doubled to 58% according to the United Nations office on drugs and crime (UNODC) Global report 2018.

Human trafficking is a crime that exploits women children and men for several purposes including forced labour and sex. A total of 225000 victims of trafficking have been detected worldwide since 2003 according to UNODC.
The US department of state for the third consecutive year has ranked Bangladesh in tire 2 watchlist as it does not fully meet the minimum standards outlined in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000.
Global action taken
Global action plan to combat trafficking in person was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2010. UN Voluntary Trust Fund for victims of trafficking to provide assistance and protection to the victims, was established by the plan.
The world adopted 2030 sustainable development agenda in September 2015 to set goals and targets on trafficking in persons.

On July 30, 2019, Government hospitals in Tamil Nadu (TN) celebrated its first ‘Hospital Day’ on the commemoration of the birth anniversary Muthulakshmi Reddy. She was one of India’s prominent successful woman doctors in the early 20th century and TN’s first woman legislator.

Former Member of Parliament (MP) from Porbandar in Gujarat Vithalbhai Radadiya passed away after a brief illness in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He was 61.

Veteran poet and lyricist M. K. Seetharam Kulal passed away
A renowned playwright, writer and former president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, M. K. Seetharam Kulal passed away after a brief illness in Bejai, Karnataka. He was 77.
i. Born in 1940, he was known for his work in the field of Tulu-Kannada dramas and also in the Tulu film world.
ii. He worked in an insurance firm & composed lyrics ‘Pakkilu Muji Onji Gududu’ and ‘Mokeda Singari’ for the popular Tulu film ‘Pagetha Puge’ in 1972.
iii. He received the “Ranga Kala Bhooshana” award for his contributions to Tulu literature.
iv. He joined Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy in 2005 & it presented the Tulu Academy Award for his work in Tulu theatre in 2015.
v. He has written Tulu language books ‘Mannda Magal Abbakka’ (Queen Abbakka: Daughter of the Soil) & ‘Darmogu Darmada Saval’ were published in 2007.
