Highlights of 107th Indian Science Congress held in Bengaluru, KarnatakaPrime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 107th edition of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) also known as ISC 2020 at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The theme of ISC for the year 2020 was “Science and Technology: Rural Development”.
Objective:
 The main objective of the summit was to bridge the gap between farmers and tech-developers.The key highlights of the event are as follows:

  • The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) participated in the “Pride of India- Science Expo- 2020” at the 107th ISC.
  • Prime Minister also launched the Indian Science Technology and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM) Portal during ISC.
  • During the ISC, Women Science Congress was held. DRDO Aeronautical Systems Director General Dr.Tessy Thomas famously known as Missile Woman of India was the chief guest for the event.

India hosts Asia Pacific drosophila research conference 1st time; 5th edition overall
The Asia Pacific drosophila research conference (APDRC) is being conducted in India for the 1st time from January 6-10 in Pune, Maharashtra. Overall this is the 5th edition of the biennial conference and is known by the name APDRC5. It is organised by Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER).
Aim: The conference aims to promote the interaction of Drosophila researchers in the Asia-Pacific region with the rest of the world.

Overview of Cabinet Approvals on 8th January, 2020The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) Chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the following proposals on January 08, 2020. The approval in detail are as follows:

  • Institute of national importance status to the cluster at Gujarat Ayurved University campus.
  • Cabinet apprised of information about amendments to the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
  • CCEA has approved the North East Gas Grid project of Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) with viability Gap Funding(VGF)/ Capital Grant at 60% of the estimated cost of Rs 9265 crore (Including interest during construction).
  • Amending Mines and Minerals Act, 2015 approved.

2nd National GST Conference to streamline GST system held in New Delhi
On January 07, 2020 the 2nd edition of the National GST Conference of the Commissioners of State Tax and Chief Commissioners of Central Tax was held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Revenue Secretary of the Ministry of Finance(MoF). The conference was held to streamline the GST (Goods and Service Tax) system and also to plug revenue leakages.

  • Committee constitution:  A committee of the centre and state officers for examining and implementing quick measures to curb fraudulent refund claims was decided to be constituted. The committee will be implemented by the end of January 2020.
  • CBDT, CBIC and GSTN Mou Signing:  A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed among Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and GST-Network (GSTN) to exchange data through Application Program Interface (API) among them.

31st International Kite Festival launched in Ahmedabad, Gujarat 
On January 7,2020 The 31st International Kite Festival has been launched at Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has inaugurated the colourful kite festival in the presence of Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on this occasion.
Key Points:
i.In this festival around 140 kite flying experts from 40 countries are participating in this event.
ii.The festival is also being organized in 9 other places across the state simultaneously including Statue of Unity- Kevadiya, Surat, and Vadodara and continue till 14th January  MakarSankranti (Uttarayan)- the festival of kites in different parts of the state.

Gujarat to set up Vikram Sarabhai Children Innovation Center soon 
Gujarat will set its Vikram Sarabhai Children Innovation Center (VSCIC) soon. The objective of the center is to identify, nurture and promote innovation of children up to 18 years in the state.The innovation centre will come up in Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Extension Research and Innovation at Gujarat University.
Key Points:
i.The centre provides a platform for children to identify their potential  with a joint partnership between the Gujarat University and  United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
ii.The centre has been named after the noted Indian Physicist and astronomer Vikram Sarabhai who is known as the ‘Father of the Indian Space Program’.
iii.Children’s Innovation Festival (CIF) organized by the Gujarat University Start-ups and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC) in which the 30 teams were selected among 480 teams from 25 districts of Gujarat.

J&K registers highest Inpatient Department (IPD) care in the country 
On January 7, 2020 Jammu and Kashmir (J&K),Union territory of India has registered the highest Inpatient Department, IPD care in the country. The state-wise fact sheets was released by National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC),New Delhi. Overall, all women in J&K are availing Antennal Care Services (ANC).
Key Points:
i.The report says that about 96% of IPD care in rural areas of J&K is provided by Public Health Services(PHS) which is highest against the country’s average of 85%.
ii.J&K had surpassed Kerala as the state with the highest life expectancy in India for all ages barring life expectancy at birth in the year 2016.

Eight Crore farmer families benefited under PM Kisan SchemeOn January 8,2020  Nearly eight crore farmer families have benefited under PM Kisan (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) scheme. The scheme was launched on 24 February 2019 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Key Points:

i.Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ministry reported more than 48 thousand 937 crore rupees has been released under the scheme till date.
ii.A new facility has been provided on PM-KISAN Web Portal- www.pmkisan.gov.in through Farmers Corner link for self-registration and edit his or her name in PM-Kisan database as per Aadhar card.
iii.The common service centre(CSC) helps farmers for self-registration and data correction.
iv.Under this scheme an income of Rs.6000 per year in three equal installments of Rs.2000 is provided to small and regional farmers.

2nd phase of Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 2.0 begins in Uttar Pradesh
On January 7, 2020, The Union Government has launched  2nd phase of vaccination drive under Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 2.0 at block level in 35 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Key Points:
i.It aims to achieve 90 % vaccination coverage among children under 2 years of age & pregnant women against 8 vaccine preventable diseases(diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, measles, meningitis and Hepatitis B).
ii.Under IMI2.0, the government will provide the immunization activity in 4 rounds over seven working days excluding the Regular immunization days, Sundays and holidays between December 2019 & March 2020.
iii.It will primarily focus on those people left out from earlier immunisation drives including dropouts, resistant families and under-served population, tribal areas and the urban areas.
About Intensified Mission Indradhanush 2.0:
It is the 2nd phase of the nationwide immunization drive to mark the 25 years of Pulse polio program. The previous version (IMI 1.0) was launched by the centre in 2017. Prior to this, Mission Indradhanush launched in the year 2014, which sought to achieve 90 % immunisation coverage in India by 2020.
The 1st round of IMI 2.0 was completed in December 2019 and the next/ 3rd round of the mission will be launched in February 2020, where it will cover 425 blocks of 73 districts of Uttar Pradesh (UP) state and 4th round will be launched in March 2020.

India ranks 34th on World Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) 2019

India was ranked at 34th place in World Economic Forum (WEF)’s World Travel, Tourism Competitiveness Index for the year 2019, a great hike from its previous ranks (i.e.65th rank in 2013, 52nd rank in 2015, 40th rank in 2017).The report was released on September 2019.
Reason behind the rise in India’s Rank:
To boost tourism sector, Government of India has taken so many initiatives.They are as follows,
i.’Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan’:The scheme is an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India. It was launched in September 2017 on World Tourism Day.
ii. Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat programme:This aims to actively enhance interaction between people of diverse cultures living in different States and UTs in India, with the objective of promoting greater mutual understanding amongst them.It was launched in the year 2015.
iii. Swadesh Darshan Scheme:The Scheme was launched in the year 2015 by Ministry of Tourism with an aim to promote, develop and harness the potential of tourism in India.
iv. Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASAD)Scheme: It aims at integrated development of pilgrimage destinations in planned, prioritised and sustainable manner to provide complete religious tourism experience & focuses on the development and beautification of the identified pilgrimage destinations.
v. E-visa has been further liberalized and visa fee on e – visa has been substantially reduced to increase tourism competitiveness of the country.
vi.Government of India has opened 120 mountain peaks for mountaineering and trekking for promoting adventure tourism.
Future Enhancements:
i.Indian government is working to develop thematic circuits under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme and 77 projects worth over Rs 6035 crore have been sanctioned till date.

First Advance Estimates of National Income of 2019-20 by NSO releasedOn January 07, 2020, the National Statistical Office (NSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released the 1st Advance estimates of the national income at both constant(2011-12) and current prices for FY(Financial Year) 2019-20. The corresponding expenditure components of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was also estimated. The data in detail are as follows:
i.GDP:
GDP in the year 2019-20 are likely to attain Rs 147.79 lakh crores against the Rs 140.78lakh crore estimate for 2018-19 released on May 31, 2019.

  • GDP growth: The growth in real GDP for 2019-20 is estimated at 5% compared to 6.8% for 2018-19.

ii.GVA at basic prices: the real Gross Value Added (GVA) at basic prices are estimated to increase to Rs 135.40 lakh crore for 2019-20 from Rs 129.07 lakh crore of 2018-19.

SBI revised India’s GDP projection to 4.6% for FY 20 from previous 5% 
On January 07, 2020, the State Bank of India (SBI) Ecowrap report has downgraded India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for FY20 (Financial year 2020) to 4.6% from its previous estimate of 5%.
Key Points:
i.Also the Central Statistics Office (CSO) recently projected GDP growth of India at 5% which is 11-year low. Previously it was set at 6.8%
ii.Factors like expenditure are the key determinants for overall growth outlook for FY20.

GoM chaired by Amit shah clears EOI & share purchase agreement for privatization of Air India
On January 7, 2020, A Group of Ministers (GoM) chaired by Union Home Minister(HM) Amit Shah has approved the Expressions of Interest (EOI) and Share Purchase Agreement for privatization of Air India, a debt-ridden state-run airline. Both these forms will be released to the bidders for Air India in January 2020.

  • The GoM also approved a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) & also a debt restructuring plan for Air India.
  • Air India is incurring a loss of Rs 20 -26 crore every day. The airline’s debt has increased to about Rs 80,000 crore & its deficit was around Rs 8,556 crore in 2018-19.
    The debt burden on Air India has reached such an extent due to its debt management inability. So, the government approved to transfer the management control to private players….Click here to Read More

i.He defeated center-right incumbent Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic(51 years old), who was the first female president of Croatia.

He is serving as the PM since June 2018. He is Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

Gaganyaan Mission: ISRO to launch IDRSS satellites for space communication purpose
On January 7, 2020, The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO),the space agency of the Government of India (GoI), has planned to launch a new satellite series called “Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS)” for seamless communication for India’s first manned space mission ‘Gaganyaan’, which have a schedule to take off in 2022.

  • IDRSS For Gangayaan Mission:
    It consists of 2 satellites, which will be deployed in phases. The 1st one planned to launch by the end of 2020 to track and be constantly in touch with Indian satellites, mainly with those in low-earth orbits (LEO). Then the 2nd IDRSS satellite will be launched in 2021, which will set the platform for the main mission launch in 2022.

4 Astronauts identified for Gaganyaan
According to the ISRO chairman Dr Kailasavadivoo Sivan, 4 astronauts have been selected from the India Air Force (IAF) for India’s first manned space mission ‘Gaganyaan’, a Rs 10,000-crore project.

NASA Discovers Potentially Habitable Earth-Sized World “TOI 700 d” in Star’s ‘Goldilocks’ Zone 
On January 7, 2020, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has discovered an Earth-sized world ‘Goldilocks’ zone within the habitable range of the star. Scientists confirmed the find as TOI 700 d by using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (SST).
About Goldilocks Zone:
The Goldilocks Zone refers to the habitable zone around a star where the temperature is not too hot and not too cold and liquid water to exist on this planet.
Key Points:
i.TESS discovered three planets in the satellite named TOI 700 b,c and d.
ii.First, habitable-zone Earth-sized planet is TOI 700 d, the outermost planet 20% larger than Earth and orbits its star in 37 days.
iii.TOI 700 d is 100 light-years away from earth.
iv.TOI b is the innermost planet which is rocky and TOI c is the middle planet between Earth and Neptune.
v.TESS was launched by NASA on 18 April 2018 to find the earth-sized planet orbiting nearby stars.

NADA bans Weightlifter Sarbjeet Kaur for four years
On January 8, 2020, Indian weightlifter Sarbjeet Kaur from Punjab has been banned for four years from the sport by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) for involvement in doping violations. Sarbjeet won the 71kg event at the 34th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship 2019 held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh

i.NADA founded Sarbjeet samples positive which were collected during 34th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship held at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
ii.Prohibited substances like Di-hydroxy-LGD-4033 (LGD 4033 METABOLITE), Selective Androgen Receptor Modulations (SARM), and Ostarine (Enobosarm) were founded in Sarbjeet’s sample.

Veteran Odissi Danseuse Padma Shri Minati Mishra passes away at 91On January 6, 2020, Veteran Odissi Danseuse Padma Shri Minati Mishra passed away in Zurich, Switzerland after suffering from age-related issues. She was born in 1929 in Cuttack, Odisha and known for expertise in the Indian Classical dance form of Odissi.
Key Points:

i.According to the 2011 report, she was the oldest living Odissi performer and in 2012 she was honored with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award by the Government of India.
ii.She was also the principal of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar, Odisha for 1964 to 1989.
iii.She was an A-Grade artist at All India Radio (AIR) and a recipient of the Sangeet Prabhakar title for Hindustani vocal music.

Former Vellore Lok Sabha MP R.P. Ulaganambi passed away at 82
On January 8, 2020, Former Vellore, Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha MP(Member of Parliament) R.P.Ulaganambi, 82 years old, passed away due to age-related illness. He was elected from Vellore for the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) party and served as an MP in the 5th Lok Sabha from 1971-76.
About R.P Ulaganambi:
i.Mr.Ulaganambi hailing from Ranipet, Vellore is a staunch follower of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar and Thanthai Periyar E.V.Ramaswamy where he was closely associated with agitations organized by the DMK, early in his career.
ii.After a disagreement with the party’s high command, he switched his loyalties to the Indian National Congress(INC) party.

On January 7, 2020, at New Delhi Union Home Minister Amit Shah released the book ‘Karmayoddha Granth’ on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The book states that the politics of appeasement, casteism, and dynasty, the three curses of Indian Politics, were removed by the PM Modi after 2014.

Maharashtra celebrates January 6, 2020, as State’s Journalists’ Day 
The Government of Maharashtra celebrates the 6th of January as a state’s Journalists’ Day every year. It was celebrated in the memory of late thespian journalist Balshastri Jambhekar.
