Kerala tops literacy rate chart with 96.2%; Andhra Pradesh worst performer at 66.4%: NSO

i.In accordance with the report on “Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey – from July 2017 to June 2018” conducted by National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Kerala again emerged as the most literate state in the country with 96.2% literacy followed by Delhi (88.7%), Uttarakhand ( 87.6%), Himachal Pradesh (86.6%) and Assam (85.9%).
ii.On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh (AP) is the worst performer at 66.4% followed by Rajasthan at 69.7%, Bihar (70.9%), Telangana (72.8%), Uttar Pradesh (73%) and Madhya Pradesh (73.7%).
iii.The overall literacy rate in India is pegged at 77.7% where rural areas has 73.5% literacy rate and urban areas has 87.7%.
iv.Literacy rate: Literacy rate is defined as the percentage of literate persons among persons of age 7 years and above.

STEPapp Partnered with MoTA to Implement Gamified Learning App in Tribal Schools

i.Eduisfun Technologies Private Limited’s STEPapp (Student Talent Enhancement Program Application) received an order from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs(MoTA) to implement its gamified learning application in the tribal schools across India and to benefit the tribal students and to empower them with quality education.
ii.This is the first time for a government institution to tie up with an Indian EdTech startup on a monetised project.
iii.As of 31st August 2020, the application has been implemented in around 242 schools across 21 States benefiting around 35167 registered students.

CSIR-CMERI and NISE Signed MoU Virtually to Strengthen Solar Energy Sector Across India

US-India-Israel summit held virtually; Decision taken for Trilateral Collaboration on 5G Tech 

i.On September 3, 2020, the virtual US (United States)-India-Israel summit was held to focus on trilateral partnerships in the strategic, technology and development arenas. There it was decided that these trio nations will collaborate in 5G technology. 
ii.This trilateral summit was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his historic visit to Israel three years ago in July 2017, community leaders on the basis of tech-triangle (Silicon Valley-Tel Aviv and Bangalore) concept which was presented by M R (Madhavan) Rangaswami to PM Modi.

On September 7, 2020 The State Government of Himachal Pradesh and World Bank signed a $82 million (approximately Rs. 600 Crores) loan deal to support Himachal Pradesh strengthen its transport and road safety institutions by improving the condition, safety, resilience, and engineering standards of the state’s road network. 
The loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), has a final maturity of 15 years including a grace period of five years.

RBI Accepted Kamath Panel Recommendations; Specifies Parameters for Loan Restructuring

i.On September 4, 2020, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) specified five financial ratios and sector-specific thresholds for resolution of COVID-19-related stressed assets in 26 sectors on the basis of the recommendations of an expert committee under the chairmanship Kundapur Vaman Kamath, which was formulated by RBI in August 2020 to set a parameters and benchmarks for stressed assets that need rescuing. 
ii.These five ratios are: Total outside liabilities/adjusted tangible net worth (TOL/ATNW), total debt/EBITDA, current ratio, debt service coverage ratio (DSCR), average debt service coverage ratio (ADSCR).
iii.In respect of other sectors where certain ratios have not been specified, the lenders shall make their own assessment keeping in view the “Resolution Framework for COVID-19-related Stress”.

Fitch Projected India’s Economy to Contract 10.5% in FY20-21 from -5%

i.On September 8, 2020, in accordance with the September update of Global Economic Outlook (GEO), Fitch Ratings projected a 10.5% contraction of India’s economy in the FY2020-2021 from a contraction of 5% estimated earlier due to continued spread of the virus and imposition of shutdowns across the country that has disrupted economic activity. For FY21-22, Indian economy will grow 11%, while for 2022-23 growth will 6%.
ii.In the first quarter of current fiscal (Q1FY21) India’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by a massive 23.9%.
iii.Separately, India Ratings and Research, the India arm of Fitch Ratings India’s GDP growth forecast to (-) 11.8% from (-) 5.3% earlier.

India’s GDP to Contract by 11.8% in FY21; Rebound to 9.9% in FY22 : Ind-Ra

i.India Ratings and Research(Ind-Ra), domestic rating agency projects India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth to contract by 11.8%(-11.8%), from earlier -5.3%. 
ii.The rating agency also expects India’s GDP to rebound and grow at 9.9% year-on-year in FY22 primarily due to the weak base of FY21. 
iii.The Indian economy contracted by a record 23.9% in 1st (April-June) quarter of FY21, which is much higher than Ind-Ra’s forecast of 17.0% due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic(lockdown).

Govind Swarup, Father of India’s Radio Astronomy & Padma Shri Awardee Passed Away at 91

Govind Swarup, Father of India’s Radio Astronomy passed away at the age of 91 due to age related complications in Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune Maharashtra.  He was the founding director of National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He is the recipient of Padma Shri(1973). He was born on  March 23rd, 1929 in 
Thakurdwara, United Provinces, British India(Now in Uttar Pradesh).

  • He is well known for his many important research contributions in several areas of astronomy and astrophysics.

Key Achievements of Govind Swarup
i.Govind Swarup served as president of the Astronomical Society of India during 1975-77.
ii.He was the key person behind the concept, design and installation of the Ooty Radio Telescope (India) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), which established India as one of the leading countries for radio astronomy research.
iii.A strong group in radio astrophysics was formed under his leadership at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, which is comparable to the best in the world.
iv.He has received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB)(1972); TWAS Prize in Physics(1988);  H. K. Firodia Award(2001)and the Grote Reber Medal (2007) among others.
v.He was the fellow of many institutions including as a Fellow of The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge(Royal Society)

ii.The initiative is aimed to support farmers of Fruits and Vegetables under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan in order to prevent distress sales, Price Stabilization interventions under Central Sector Scheme – ‘Operation Greens’.
iii.It has been extended from Tomato, Onion and Potato (TOP) to all notified fruits and vegetables (TOTAL) for a period of six months on a pilot basis.
