Rajnath Singh flags-in India’s 1st Multidimensional Adventure Sports Expedition in FranceRaksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flags-in India’s first multi-dimensional

On January 07, 2022 the Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh flagged-in the first multi-dimensional adventure sports expedition of India, which was conducted by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in France.
Highlights:
i.The expedition was led by the Director of NIMAS Colonel Sarfaraz Singh along with 12 others which include 8 Army personnel and 4 youths of Arunachal Pradesh.
ii.The appreciation certificates were distributed by the Union Defence Minister in New Delhi.
 
About the Expedition:
i.The expedition team carried out over 250 kilometres (KM) of winter trekking in the Alps Mountain Ranges in France.
ii.The team explored the Tour De Mont Blanc trek, which covered the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.
iii.The cycling journey of over  975 KM was also carried out from Alps Mountain Ranges to the English Channel without any logistics near Dunkirk via France, Switzerland and Belgium.

PM Modi Inaugurates the 2nd campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata

Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 2nd Campus of the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) in Rajarhat New Town area of Kolkata, West Bengal. The facility would assist in ensuring quality healthcare to the people of the poor and middle class.

  • The new campus build at a cost of over Rs 540 crore has 460 beds for a comprehensive cancer unit equipped with state of the art facility for cancer diagnosis staging, treatment and care.
  • The new campus will also act as an advanced cancer research facility.
  • Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister(CM) of West Bengal attended the event through video conference.

Gurugram to Get India’s 1st Heli-Hub with Many Aviation Facilities

The government of Haryana in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation is set to establish India’s first-ever Heli Hub in Gurugram. The first of its kind heli-hub in Gurugram is designed to all the facilities in one place for Helicopters.

    • The hub will have several aviation facilities like Heliport, Hangars, repairs and other related services.
    • The hub will be developed in 10-20 acres of land well connected with Dwarka Expressway and National Highway(NH)8.
    • This is one of the 10 helicopter hubs and corridors proposed under the new Helicopter Policy of the Civil Aviation Ministry.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

Worlds’ Five Powerful Nations Issue Pledge to Prevent Spread of Nuclear Weapons 

In January 2022, the 5 most powerful nations of the world, viz China, France, Russia, the UK (United Kingdom) and the US (United States) have agreed and signed a pledge (a joint statement) to prevent atomic weapons from spreading and to ensure a nuclear war is never fought.

  • The 5 nations were the nuclear weapons states recognised by the 1968 Treaty of the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and they were also the 5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. They are known as the P5 or the N5.
  • The joint statement represents a renewed commitment to prevent any confrontation from turning into a nuclear war.

Note – The joint pledge was issued ahead of the 10th review of the NPT, which was postponed from its scheduled date of January 4, 2022, to later in 2022.
About Treaty of the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT):
i.It is an international treaty to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to achieve complete nuclear disarmament.
ii.The treaty was opened for signature in 1968, and later entered into force in 1970. A total of 191 States have joined the Treaty, including the five nuclear-weapon States.
iii.4 UN member states that have never signed the treaty were India, Israel, Pakistan, and South Sudan.
iv.North Korea is the only country to withdraw from the treaty.

NPCI sets standardized limits for cash withdrawals and mini statements on AePS transactions

In order to make Aadhaar enabled Payments Systems (AePS) more standardized, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced limits for cash withdrawals and mini statements which needs to implement by the acquiring banks by January 15, 2022.
What are the guidelines?
i.As per the guidelines, the acquiring banks will have to implement a maximum limit of five approved cash withdrawal transactions per customer per terminal per day.

  • Cash withdrawal from micro ATMs (Automated teller machine) of AePS has a limit of Rs 10,000 per transaction.

ii.Issuers will implement a standardised limit of a minimum of five approved cash withdrawal transactions per month for every customer.
iii.Further, issuers will also implement a standardised limit of a minimum of five mini statement transactions per customer per month.
iv.There will also be Two-factor authentication for login of business correspondents (BC), agents and merchants at least once a day with one of the factors as Aadhaar based biometric authentication.

  • For this measure the deadline is fixed at January 31, 2022.

Background:
In March 2021, NPCI asked banks to implement a minimum monthly limit of five mini statement transactions. Post five transactions, issuer banks can either decline the request or charge a fee.

  • A total of 9.6 crore transactions worth Rs 25,860.92 crore took place through AePS in December 2021.

India’s GDP growth rate stood at 9.2% in FY22: First Advance Estimates of National Income for FY22 by NSO

i.On January 7, 2022, the First Advance Estimates (FAE) of National Income at both Constant (2011-12) and Current Prices, for the financial year 2021-22 (FY22) released by National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of statistics and planning implementation (MOSPI).
ii.In accordance with the estimates the growth in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or GDP at Constant Prices (2011-12) for FY22 stood at 9.2% as compared to the contraction of 7.3% (-7.3%) in 2020-21. It is 1.3% over the pre-Covid levels of FY20.
iii.This estimate is lower than the 9.5% GDP growth projection of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in December 2021.
iv.Per capita net national income in real terms is estimated to be Rs 1,06,975 crore in FY22, lower than Rs 1,07,589 crore in FY20.

India’s GDP growth for FY22 Could be Revised to 9.5%: SBI Ecowrap

As per the report of State Bank of India’s (SBIs) economic research team Ecowrap, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in FY22 was estimated to be revised to around 9.5 percent.
Key Points:
i.The first advance estimate of GDP growth by the National Statistical Office (NSO) has stated India’s FY22 GDP growth at 9.2 percent.
ii.The  GDP growth calculated for H2 (Second Half) FY22 for construction was at 0.9 percent and for financing, insurance, real estate & business services is at 2 percent.
iii.On the expenditure side, the report assessed that the private final consumption expenditure is still 3 percent below the pre-pandemic level (FY20).
iv.For FY23, the fiscal consolidation should remain limited to 30-40 basis points from the FY22. The fiscal deficit of the Government in FY22 is expected to come at Rs 15.88 lakh crore or 6.8 percent of the GDP.
Nominal GDP growth:
i.The nominal GDP growth stands at 17.6 percent in FY22, which is the second-highest nominal growth achieved, compared to 19.9 percent in 2010-11 and 17.1 percent growth in 2006-07.
ii.The data indicates that the overall GDP growth is 1 percent above the pre-pandemic level (FY20).

India to overtake Japan as Asia’s second largest economy by 2030: IHS

In accordance with IHS Markit Ltd report, India will overtake Japan as Asia’s second-largest economy by 2030. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is also projected to surpass that of Germany and the United Kingdom (UK) to rank as world’s No.3.

  • Currently, India is the sixth-largest economy in the world, behind the United States (US), China, Japan, Germany and the UK.

Key Points:
i.India’s nominal GDP measured in USD terms projected an increase from $2.7 trillion in 2021 to $8.4 trillion by 2030.
ii.India’s consumption expenditure will double from $1.5 trillion in 2020 to $3 trillion by 2030.
iii.For FY22 (April 2021 to March 2022), India’s real GDP growth rate is projected to be 8.2%, rebounding from the severe contraction of 7.3% year-on-year in 2020-21
iv.The Indian economy will continue to grow in the 2022-23(FY23), at a pace of 6.7%.
v.By 2030, 1.1 billion Indians will have internet access, more than doubling from the estimated 500 million internet users in 2020.

Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat Announces 3rd NWA 2020; UP got Best State Award Followed by Rajasthan, TN

On 7th January 2022 Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced 3rd National Water Awards-2020. 

  • Uttar Pradesh (UP) has been awarded first prize in the Best State category, followed by Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
  • Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh received the best district award in the northern zone followed by Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar in Punjab.

Facts:
i.India’s current water requirement is estimated to be around 1,100 billion cubic meters per year which are projected to rise up to 1,447 billion cubic meters by 2050.
ii.India has more than 18 percent of the world’s population but has only 4 percent of the world’s renewable water resources.

‘Kerala Arts & Crafts Village’ wins ‘International Craft Award for 2021

On 7th January 2022, the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village Organization (KACV) from Kovalam was awarded with the ‘International Craft Award for 2021’ for the best craft village in the world by the World Crafts Council International.

  • It is the only award India received in the non-individual category.
  • The KACV was established by the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (UL CCS) for the State Tourism Department of Kerala.

i.In 2017 the International Craft Awards were launched to honor organizations, councils etc across  the world who significantly contributed to  the sustainable development of the handicraft industry.

  • In 2020, the Village of the Year award was won by ‘Kraf Komuniti Ku’ in Malaysia.

ICSD gives approval to AISCD to hold 1st World Deaf T20 Cricket Championship at Kerala in 2023

The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) gave the approval to All India Sports Council of the Deaf  (AISCD) to host the 1st World Deaf T20 Cricket Championship in Kerala from January 10 to 20, 2023.

  • The World Deaf T20 cricket championship will be organized in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where it is expected to see participants from 8 countries.
  • This championship was planned to be conducted in 2020, moved to 2023 due to COVID outbreak.

Sri Lankan Cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka Announces Retirement from Test Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), a National Cricket Association of Sri Lanka had announced, the Country’s opening batsman, Danushka Gunathilaka, announced retirement from Test cricket at the age of 30 to focus on white-ball formats.

  • Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Sri Lankan batter also announced his retirement from international cricket.

Key Highlights:
i.The trio of Gunathilaka, Mendis and Dickwella was banned from international cricket for the breach of bio-bubble protocols during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in 2020.

  • The ban also included a six-month suspension from domestic cricket, with a fine of USD 50,000.

ii.Gunathilaka has served three separate suspensions, since his international debut in the year 2015.
About Danushka Gunathilaka:
i.Mashtayage Danushka Gunathilaka born on 17th March 1991 in Panadura is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer.
ii.Overall, In 44 ODIs, he has scored 1,520 runs at an average of 36.19, while in T20Is, he has 568 runs in 30 matches at a strike rate of 121.62.
iii.Gunathilaka, hasn’t played a Test match since 2018.

Sidney Poitier First Black Actor to Win Best Actor Oscar Award Passed Away 
Sidney Poitier is a Bahamian-American actor, the first black actor and the first Bahamian to win the Oscar Award for Best Actor Award, has passed away at his residence in Los Angeles, United States of America. He was born on 20th February in 1927 in Miami, Florida, United States of America.

  • Until his death, he was the oldest surviving male Academy Award winner.

About Sidney Poitier:
i.Sidney Poitier is an actor, film director, activist, and ambassador.
ii.He is well known for his films like The Defiant Ones, A Raisin in the Sun, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night.
iii.He served as the Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007 and he has also served as the ambassador of the Bahamas to UNESCO.
iv.He published his autobiography titled “ The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography” in 2000.
v.He has authored several books including Montaro Caine; This life; and Life Beyond Measure.
Awards & honours:
i.Sidney Poitier received an Academy Award for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field (1963) and an  Honorary Award presented in 2001.
ii.He has also received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in the 1960s.
iii.He has also received several awards including, the Lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute.
iv.In 2009, then President of America, Barack Obama, honoured Poitier with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour of the USA, for his artistic and humanitarian achievements.

Assam Signs MoU with NDDB for Dairy Development

On 7th January 2022 Assam Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for holistic dairy development to set up Joint venture (JV) worth Rs.2000 Crore which aims at processing 10 Lakh litres of milk through 6 new milk processing units in 7 years.

  • The JV will be guided, monitored and mentored by NDDB

Signatories – It was signed by Meenesh Shah, Chairman, NDDB and Maninder Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Cooperation, Government of Assam
Key Points:
i.Assam will induct 15,000 high milk-yielding Gir cows of Gujarat to ensure higher returns to the dairy farmers with huge employment opportunities and would benefit more than 1,75,000 dairy farmers of Assam and increase their earnings.
Under the MoU:
i.Six dairy processing facilities will be set up across Assam where milk from more than 4100 diary cooperative societies will be processed, packed and marketed.
ii.Two cattle-feed and organic manure manufacturing units would also be set up along with the import of high yielding cattle breeds and artificial insemination.
Other Launch:
Purabi Dairy expansion project is launched under World Bank-funded Assam Agribusiness & Rural Transportation Project (APART) which would increase its production capacity from 60 to 150 thousand liters per day (TLPD).

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel Inaugurated 2-day ICAI-2022; Launched SSIP 2.0, Over 30 MoUs Signed in Education Sector

In January 2022, the Gujarat Chief Minister (CM) Bhupendra Patel inaugurated a two-day International Conference of Academic Institutions 2022 (ICAI-2022), which was held at Gujarat Science City campus, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

  • The conference was jointly organised by the Education Department, the Government of Gujarat, the Union Ministry of Education, and the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
  • During the conference, the CM launched the 2nd edition of the Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP 2.0), as the five-year tenure of the SSIP-1 will end on January 10, 2021. The SSIP 2.0 will remain in force till March 2027.

-Over 30 MoUs Signed in the higher and technical education sector in Gujarat
Over 30 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) has been signed in the higher and technical education sector in Gujarat during the ICAI-2022. The MoUs were signed ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2022, which was scheduled to be held between January 10 and 12, 2022.

  • The MoUs were signed by the British Council of India, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), MGIEP (Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development), among others.

Telangana forest Minister launches 1st of its Kind Mobile App ‘Urban Forest Park’

The Forest Department of Telangana launched 1st of its Kind mobile app namely ‘Urban Forest Parks’ that gives all information about theme based Urban Forest Parks and facilitates the visitors to plan their visits and journey.

  • It was launched by the state’s Forest Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy.
  • It is developed by PamTen Software Solutions Private Limited.

Key Points:
i.The app provides all the information about the parks, including entry ticket fee, special features of the park, distance from the app user, route app etc.
ii.In the first phase, the app discloses information for 39 parks developed under HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority), Medchal, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad limits.

  • In the second phase, information of all other parks across the State will be covered.
