DAC Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Approves Military Modernization Projects Worth Rs 76,390 Crore

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence (MoD), has granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Armed Forces Capital Acquisition Proposals worth Rs 76,390 crore.

  • The approval is issued under “Buy (Indian)”, “Buy & Make (Indian)”, and “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured (IDDM))” categories.

This will provide India’s defence industry a big boost while also reducing foreign spending. India is one of the world’s top defence importers.
Note: The AoN is only the beginning of the acquisition process; it can take anywhere from five to fifteen years for an AoN to become a contract and for military equipment and platforms to be delivered.
The Following Projects Have Received Approval from the DAC:
i.For the Indian Navy, the DAC accorded AoN for procurement of Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) for around Rs 36,000 crore. The corvettes should be 120-meter-long with a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles and be capable of sailing at 27 knots, according to the Navy.

  • Corvettes are the smallest vessels in the capital warship category. They weigh from 500-to-2,000 tonnes, while a frigate, the size class above a corvette, weighs from 2,000-to-5,000 tonnes.
  • Coastal patrol craft, missile boats, and quick attack craft are the sorts of ships that fall below corvettes in modern usage.

ii.These NGCs will be adaptable platforms for surveillance missions, escort operations, deterrence, Surface Action Group (SAG) operations, Search & Attack, and Coastal Defence.
iii. These NGCs will be based on a new indigenous design by the Indian Navy, and will contribute to the government’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region) initiative by utilising cutting-edge shipbuilding technology.
iv.The DAC issued new AoNs for the Indian Army to procure Rough Terrain Fork Lift Trucks (RTFLTs), Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs), Wheeled Armoured Fighting Vehicles (Wh AFVs) with Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), and Weapon Locating Radars (WLRs) from domestic sources, with an emphasis on indigenous design and development.
v.For the Indian Air Force, the DAC granted AoNs to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)for the production of Dornier-228 reconnaissance aircraft and Sukhoi-30 Mark (MK) I aero-engines, with an emphasis on increasing indigenization, particularly in aero-engine material.
vi.The DAC has approved the “Digital Coast Guard” project under the “Buy (Indian) acquisition Category”, which would provide a secure pan-India network for the Coast Guard to digitize various surface and aviation operations, logistics, finance, and Human Resource (HR) procedures.

Maruti Suzuki Installs Asia’s largest 20 MWp carport type Solar Plant at Manesar, Haryana

Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation(Japan), has installed Asia’s largest 20 MegaWatt Peak (MWp) carport-type solar power plant at its Manesar facility in Gurugram, Haryana. The Manesar facility will produce 28,000 MegaWatt Hour(MWh) per annum of solar power.

  • The generated power will be equivalent to the energy required to produce more than 67000 cars annually which would be around 11.5% of the total energy requirement of the facility.
  • A solar carport is an overhead shade designed as a parking area shelter with solar panels mounted on them.

Features of the Solar Carport:
i.The 20 MWp car-port style solar power plant is designed with the lowest area per unit of power generation using the East-West direction concept. This maximises power generation using minimum land.
ii.The Car-port facility has space to park about 9,000 finished vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki & Solar Energy:
i.With the installation of the first solar power plant of 1 MWp at its Manesar facility, Maruti Suzuki has been harnessing solar energy since 2014. Later, the plant was expanded to 1.3 MWp.
ii.In 2020, the company commissioned a 5 MWp carport style photovoltaic solar power plant at its Gurugram facility.
iii. With this new Carport plant at Manesar, the combined solar power generation capacity of Maruti Suzuki stands at 26.3 MWp.
iv.This will ensure the avoidance of around 20000 tons of Carbon dioxide emission per year.
