Environment Minister, Bhupender Yadav Chaired the 19th Meeting of NTCA; 14 Tiger Reserves got CA|TS Accreditation19th Meeting of National Tiger Conservation Authorit

On January 05, 2022, the 19th Meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held under the chairmanship of the Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Bhupender Yadav.

  • Currently, there are 51 Tiger Reserves in India and more than 35 rivers originate from those areas which are crucial for water security.
  • As per the statement of the environment minister, Tiger continues to be an endangered species and the tiger population need to be managed actively.

Highlights of Key Initiatives Launched:
i.The environment minister launched an action plan for the reintroduction, protection and conservation of  7 major big cats in India including the cheetah, which has become extinct in independent India.

  • Under the action plan, 50 cheetah’s will be introduced in the next 5 years in various parks.

ii.He stated about the success of the ‘India for Tigers: A Rally on Wheels’, which was organized under the aegis of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
iii.He also released a Water Atlas, mapping all the water bodies in the tiger bearing areas of India.
iv.He announced that 14 Tiger reserves across India have received accreditation of the global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS). NTCA is working on getting other Tiger Reserves evaluated for CA|TS accreditation.

MoHUA-NIUA & 15 Academic Institutes launches Smart cities and Academia Towards Action & Research (SAAR)

i.As part of the nationwide Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrations, the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) has launched a ‘Smart cities and Academia Towards Action & Research (SAAR)’ programme.
ii.It is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and 15 leading Indian academic institutions.
iii.Under SAAR, there will be preparation of a compendium of 75 landmark urban projects under SCM. These will be innovative, multi-sectoral, and have been implemented across geographies.

Telecommunication Engineering Centre releases Report on ‘Code of Practice for Securing Consumer Internet of Things’

A Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), under Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, has released a report ‘Code of Practice for Securing Consumer Internet of Things (IoT)’ a baseline requirement aligned with global standards and best practices to secure Consumer IoT devices.

  • It is released for the use by IoT device manufacturers, Service providers/ system integrators and application developers etc.

Need behind this report:
The growth of IoT devices is at full pace therefore it is required to protect the users and the networks that connect these IoT devices from hacking by adhering to safety and security standards.

  • IoT is being used to create smart infrastructure in various verticals such as Power, Automotive, Safety & Surveillance, Remote Health Management, Agriculture, Smart Homes and Smart Cities etc, using connected devices.

Key Points:
i.As per the projections, there may be 26.4 billion IoT devices in service globally by 2026.

  • Out of this, approximately 20% will be on cellular technologies. Ratio of Consumer and Enterprise IoT devices may be 45% : 55%.

ii.As per the National Digital Communication Policy (NDCP) 2018 released by DoT, an eco-system is needed for 5 billion connected devices by 2022.

  • Therefore, it is expected that around 60% of 5 billion i.e. 3 billion connected devices may exist in India by 2022.

iii.TEC is working in the IoT domain and released sixteen Technical Reports (https://tec.gov.in/M2M-IoT-technical-reports)

Dr Jitendra Singh Launches Theme of National Science Day 2022On 5th January 2022 Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) Dr Jitendra Singh launched the theme of National Science Day 2022 in New Delhi raising public appreciation of the scientific issues.

  • The National Science Day (NSD) is observed every year on 28th February to mark the discovery of the Raman effect.

Theme – ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology (S&T) for Sustainable Future’.
Key Highlights:
i.The Department of Science and Technology (DST) acts as a nodal agency to support, catalyze, and coordinate the celebration of NSD across India.
ii.The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) provides grants to state science and technology departments and councils for organising lectures, quizzes, open houses, etc,.
iii.The S&T Minister has stressed the need for integration of Science based on four pillars:

  • To work on a Theme-based approach of problem-solving by all science Ministries and Departments.
  • To work on the extended Science Integration aligned with technical, engineering and medical institutes.
  • To work on the extra Science Integration that is aligned with Line Ministries or Departments of Central Government.
  • To work on the extended Science-Driven Approach involving industries and start-ups leading to a sustainable future.

Awards presented on NSD:
i.The DST presents the National Awards for Science every year starting from 1987 to encourage and recognize the outstanding efforts in the area of S&T communication
ii.The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) that supports basic research in science and engineering presents SERB women excellence award.

  • About SERB – This provides grants to women below 40 years of age who have received recognition from any one or more national Academies such as Young Scientist Medal, Young Associateship medal, etc.

iii.Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) award, an initiative of DST is also presented on NSD to recognize Research in Science, Technology and Innovation by PhD Scholars and Post Doctoral Fellows in popular science writing format.

Telangana Tops in Highest Number of ODF Villages; Followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka


Telangana has stood first among other states in India in the list of the highest number of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus villages under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II programme till December 31, 2021.

  • Around 13,737 villages out of 14,200 villages in Telangana are on the ODF Plus list, which stands at 96.74 percent.
  • Telangana is followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,432 villages, next by Karnataka with 1,511 villages and Gujarat took the 17th position with only 83 villages (0.45 percent).

Telangana Government has taken numerous efforts for the holistic development of the villages by ensuring proper monitoring of welfare and implementation of waste management.

New Coronavirus Variant Named IHU, Discovered in France

The Scientists of France have discovered a new variant of the Coronavirus, named IHUB.1.640.2 variant. The new variant named IHU was discovered by the academics at the institute IHU Mediterranee Infection, Marseille, France.

  • It was named IHU because it was first identified at the University Hospital Institute Mediterranean Infection, or IHU, in Marseille.
  • IHU variant contains 46 mutations (more than the Omicron) and 37 deletions resulting in 30 amino acid substitutions and 12 deletions.
  • IHU (B.1.640.2) has not been spotted in other countries or labelled a variant under investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO).

RBI Releases Eligibility Criteria for Entities to Become ‘specified Users’ of CICs

On January 05, 2022, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the eligibility criteria for entities to be categorised as ‘Specified User’ of Credit Information Companies (CICs). The eligible criteria are issued under clause (j) of Regulation 3 of the CICs (Amendment) Regulations, 2021.
Eligibility criteria:
i.A ‘specified user’ should be a company incorporated in India or a Statutory Corporation established in India.
ii.Experience: In case the entity is a company, it should have not less than 3 years of experience in running the business/activity of processing information for the support or benefit of credit institutions and shall have a clean track record.
iii.Net worth: The company should have a net worth of not less than Rs 2 crore as per the latest audited balance sheet and should meet the requirement on a continuing basis.
About Credit Information Companies (CICs):
i.Currently, there are 4 CICs — Credit Information Bureau (India) Ltd (CIBIL), Equifax Credit Information Services Pvt Ltd, Experian Credit Information Company of India Pvt Ltd and CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services Pvt Ltd.
Functions:
ii.Along with the business of credit information, a CIC will also provide credit information to individual and corporate borrowers’ own credit reports and also provide data management services to its member’s Credit Institutions.
iii.CIC will also collect, process, collate and disseminate data/information related to property mortgaged to credit institutions and investments made in Securities other than those issued by Central Government.

Reliance Jio Introduces UPI Autopay in Collaboration with NPCI 

On 6th January 2022, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Reliance Jio collaborated to announce the introduction of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) Autopay for the telecom industry.

  • Through this collaboration, Reliance Jio has become the 1st telecom company to launch a UPI autopay facility for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers.
  • Jio customers can now autopay for their tariff plans on the MyJio app and avail touch-free auto-recharge and bill payments facility.

Benefits:
i.Jio Users can create, modify and remove the e-mandate for the tariff plans by setting instructions on the MyJio App using UPI Autopay.
ii.Jio users will no longer need to remember their date of recharge once the validity ends as the users’ recharge would auto-renew on the set date.
iii.The customers do not have to enter the UPI PIN for recharge amounts up to Rs.5,000.

Reliance Launches India Inc’s Biggest Bond Sale AbroadOn 5th January 2022, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) launched a mega bond sale as it desired to raise USD 3 to 5 billion from offshore investors.

  • The sale is claimed as the largest-ever foreign currency bond issuance from India and 2022’s first fundraising by an Indian company.

Highlights:
i.RIL received bids of about USD 11-12 billion, named as ‘order book size’ in the market.
ii.Barclays, Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan, MUFG and Standard Chartered Bank are among those working with RIL to raise the money overseas.
iii.The proceeds from the bond sale will be used to refinance existing debt and for financing capital expenditure or general corporate purpose
iv.Moody’s Investors Service assigned a Baa2 rating (i.e) above the lowest investment grade rank to the RIL offshore bonds with a stable outlook

i.RIL has raised USD 4 billion by issuing US dollar bonds in three tranches of – 10 years, 30 years and 40 years.

  • It has raised USD 1.5 billion in a 10-year tranche, USD 1.75 billion in a 30-year and USD 750 million in a 40-year deal.

ii.The bonds have been priced at 120 basis points (bps), 160 bps and 170 bps over the respective US Treasuries benchmark.

NTPC Limited to Acquire 5% Equity Stake in PXIL NTPC Limited (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited,) is set to acquire up to 5% of the equity stake in Power Exchange India Limited (PXIL). 
PXIL is India’s first institutionally promoted power exchange, that provides electricity trading solutions and connects buyers as well as sellers.

  • This acquisition is in line with the intention of the government to increase the share of the spot power market to 25% of the total electricity supply in India by 2023- 2024.

Key Points:
NTPC ltd cannot buy more than 5% of the equity stake in PXIL since it could also be a seller or buyer on the trading platform.
According to the data on the portal of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs(MCA), the authorised share capital of the PXIL is Rs 120 crore and the paid-up capital is Rs 58.47 crore.
Background:
In October 2021, the expert group, established by the Ministry of Power, recommended expanding the size of short-term power trading from about 5% at present to 25% by 2023-24.

  • This is expected to be part of the draft National Electricity Policy (NEP).

Additional info:
i.According to the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), the share of the short-term market has accounted for 10% of the total electricity procured in 2019-20.
90% of the total power supply was procured by the distribution company(discom) through long-term contracts and short-term intra-state transactions.
ii.According to the industry data, the short-term trading is around 14-15% of the total power supply in India and most of that is bilateral PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) while the exchange trading is 5%.

Reliance Retail Picked up a 25.8% Stake in Dunzo for USD 200 Million Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL), a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited(RIL) has purchased a 25.8% stake in Bengaluru-based startup Dunzo (Dunzo Digital Private Limited), an Indian company, with an investment of USD 200 Million (~ Rs 1489 crore).
Dunzo funding round:
i.Dunzo has raised USD 240 million in a round of funding where the investment was led by RRVL.
ii.Lightbox, Lightrock, 3L Capital and Alteria Capital, the existing investors of Dunzo were the other participants of the funding round.
Key Points:
i.The capital will be utilised to enable instant delivery of essentials from a network of micro warehouses and expand Dunzo’s (Business-to-Business) B2B business vertical to enable logistics for local merchants in Indian cities.
ii.The additional capital will be used to expand the quick commerce business to 15 cities across India.
Additional info:
Dunzo and RRVL will also enter into a business partnership under which Dunzo will enable hyperlocal logistics for the retail stores operated by RRVL and enhance the omni-channel capabilities of RRVL.

  • Under the partnership, Dunzo will also facilitate last-mile deliveries for JioMart’s merchant network.

Shillong Chamber Choir founder Neil Nongkynrih passed away

On 5 January 2022, the founder of Shillong Chamber Choir (SCC) and renowned Indian concert pianist Neil Nongkynrih, aka Uncle Neil, passed away at the age of 51 years in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Notable performance by SCC:

  • In 2010, SCC performed for former US President Barack Obama & Michelle Obama during their visit to India.
  • SCC’s version of ‘Vande Maataram’ was played during the live telecast program Indian space rocket Chandrayaan – 2’s landing on the moon.

ii.He studied music at Trinity College in London and in 2001 he laid the foundation of SCC in Shillong.

Odisha govt, GAIL India sign MoU for Clean Energy Projects in Odisha; NHPC, GEDCOL to form JVOn January 5, 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked between the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha (IPICOL) and GAIL India (Formerly known as Gas Authority Of India Ltd) in Bhubaneswar (Odisha) for the production of eco-friendly fuels in Odisha.

  • Both entities will cooperate in the areas of green hydrogen, green ammonia and renewable energy (solar/wind).
  • Also, a feasibility study will take place for setting up proposed plants.

Key Points:

i.Green Hydrogen will reduce aggregate emissions of Green House Gases (GHGs) which will further contribute to the Central government’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC).
ii.It should be noted that Odisha is a power surplus state and this MoU will help Odisha based heavy industries to supplement their growing power.
iii.In Odisha, GAIL is already laying a natural gas pipeline, setting up a City Gas Distribution (CGD) project, and coal gasification plant in JV (Joint Venture) mode.
NHPC, GEDCOL to form JV for setting up 500-MW floating Solar Power Projects
NHPC (erstwhile National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) Limited has signed a promoters agreement with Green Energy Development Corporation of Odisha Ltd (GEDCOL) to form a JV for setting up a 500-megawatt (MW) floating solar power projects in Odisha.

  • In this, NHPC will hold a 74% stake, while GEDCOL holds 26%.

Key Points:
i.The JV will have an authorised share capital of Rs 500 crore divided into 50 crore shares of Rs 10 each.
ii.It will have at least four directors on its board and not more than 15 with a ratio in proportion to equity participation (i.e. 74: 26 rounded to 3:1) for NHPC and GEDCOL, respectively, subject to a minimum of one director by each of the parties.

HP CM Jai Ram Thakur Launched UNNATI portal & Mobile app of HPSIDC 

Jai Ram Thakur, Chief Minister(CM) of Himachal Pradesh(HP) has launched the UNNATI portal and the mobile application(app) of the Himachal Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation Limited (HPSIDC). He also launched the website of the HPSIDC.
UNNATI portal:
i.The UNNATI portal will allow the user to work in collaboration with others and focus on individual projects.
ii.The UNNATI portal enables real-time collaboration and allows the users to share and work on documents together from any place and at any time.
HPSIDC Website:
The HPSIDC website will ensure timely project updates to the people at all levels and support them to avoid missing deadlines and maintain the workflows tools in one place.
HPSIDC & SAIL signed MoU:
i.HPSIDC and the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) for the supply of steel to the corporation within the state unless the corporation chooses to acquire from alternate sources due to material unavailability.
ii.The MoU was signed in the presence of CM Jai Ram Thakur.

Syntizen, a Digital Identity Solutions provider, has partnered with the Odisha government to provide a Video KYC solution in offering life certificates to 5 lakh pension seekers.

  • Odisha is the first State in India to implement a digital process which includes Aadhaar Validation for simplifying the process of obtaining a life certificate.

i.The digital process is based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) – powered or Machine Learning (ML) based for easy and fast remedial measures for pensioners.

  • Odisha Computer Application Center (OCAC), a PSU under IT Department, Government of Odisha in partnership with Syntizen Technologies and Dept of Finance is providing the Al/ML based solution to issue life certificates and ease pension disbursements.

ii.Currently, Syntizen provides Aadhaar solutions to several states, such as the Telangana government, Uttar Pradesh government, Tamil Nadu government, and Andhra Pradesh government.

J&K govt signs pact with LuLu Group to set up Food Processing & Logistics hub in Srinagar

On 5 January 2021, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LuLu Group International to establish the Food Processing and Logistics hub in Srinagar (Summer Capital of J&K).

i.The LG inaugurated the Jammu and Kashmir promotion week at the LuLu Hypermarket in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

  • The GI-tagged saffron of J&K was launched at LuLu Hypermarket.

Note- J&K is the only state in India where saffron is produced and it ranks first in the production of Saffron, Apple, Walnut, and Almond in India.
ii.The agreement will boost the trade and commerce between J&K and Dubai. It will increase the export demand of indigenous products such as saffron, walnuts, apples etc.
