Nirmala Sitharaman Virtually Inaugurated India’s 1st 3D Printed House at IIT-M

Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman virtually inaugurated India’s 1st 3D printed house at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • The single-storey home has been built in just five days over an area of about 600 sq. ft using ‘Concrete 3D Printing”
  • TVASTA Manufacturing Solutions, a start-up founded by IIT-M alumni in association with Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Centre for Innovation in Shelter built the 3D Printed House.
  • The 3D Printed House would help to meet the deadline of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of the ‘housing for all’ scheme by 2022.
  • TVASTA Manufacturing was set up as part of the, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’s ASHA Incubator.

Gist about 3D printing:

3D Printing, commonly known as additive manufacturing, is the computer-controlled sequential layering of materials to create three-dimensional shapes. From automobile to jewellery to healthcare, the technology is used in a wide range of industries. The Global market of 3D printing is expected to reach 34.8 billion USD by 2024.

In 2020, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology released the National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing.

NATO Launches Multinational Military Exercise ‘DEFENDER-Europe 21’ in AlbaniaNATO-military-exercises-launched-in-AlbaniaThe North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) launched the Joint Multinational Military Exercise  ‘DEFENDER-Europe 21’ in the port of Durres in Albania, the exercise began on April 26, 2021 and will go on till June 10, 2021.

  • ‘DEFENDER-Europe 21’ is led by the United States (US). It is an annual exercise held between US and NATO Countries to build readiness and interoperability.
  • Around 28, 000 US & NATO forces from 26 nations participated in the drills.
  • It is the 1st such large-scale drills since World War-II in the Western Balkans region.

i.It is an International Alliance of 30 countries from North America and Europe.
ii.It is based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April, 1949.

Sebi Imposed Fine of  Rs 1.75 Cr on Several Entities in Vakrangee Case

A total fine of Rs 1.75 crore was imposed by Markets regulator SEBI(Securities Exchange Board of India) on several entities for indulging in fraudulent trading in the scrip of Vakrangee Ltd. The entities have violated Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices norms.

  • In one of the two orders a fine of Rs 50 lakh each was imposed on a group of 22 connected entities and on a group of 16 entities.
  • And in another order a fine of Rs 75 lakh  was imposed on the connected group of 27 entities.

Shyamala Ganesh Received the 3rd Highest Order of Japan, Order of The Rising Sun from The Consulate-General of JapanShyamala Ganesh,79, the former director of the Japanese Language School, received the 3rd highest order decoration of Japan, Order of the Rising Sun, under the class Gold and Silver Rays from the Consulate-General of Japan in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • She received the order for her contribution in spreading the Japanese culture and language in Karnataka and other parts of India and for promoting the friendship and goodwill between Japan and India.

Key points:
i.She is also the former President of the Bengaluru Chapter of Ohara-Ryu Ikebana and supported to popularise the cultural traditions of Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangements. Along with her husband Ganesh she has started a Japanese language school in 1983.
ii.Since the establishment of the Consulate-General of Japan in Bangalore, this is the first time a Bengalurean has been conferred with the Japanese government’s honour.

i.Former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India, Nripendra Misra won the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star” for his Contribution in strengthening the economic relationship between Japan and India.
ii.Former President of the Ikebana International Gurgaon Chapter, Indira Misra won the “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” for the Contribution to promote Ikebana in India and friendly relations between Japan and India.
iii.Former Local Employee, Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai, Luis Anton Fernandes won the “Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays” for Contribution to the activities of the Japanese overseas establishment.
About the Order of the Rising Sun and its class: 
It is the third-highest order national decoration awarded by the Japanese government and it was established in 1875 as Japan’s first order and it was awarded in 6 classes in which the 5th Class of Gold and Silver Rays is ordinarily conferred upon individuals who have made significant contributions to Japan in varying degrees.

ACC has cleared his appointment for a period of 3 years or till his date of superannuation.

  • He succeeds B P Kanungo, who retired on 2nd April 2021 after serving one year extension period.
  • RBI cannot hold more than 4 deputy governors. The other 3 Deputy Governors of RBI are Mahesh Kumar Jain, Michael D Patra and Rajeshwar Rao.

Former Supreme Court Judge P C Pant appointed Acting Chairperson of NHRC

Justice (retired) Prafulla Chandra Pant (PC Pant), a Former Supreme Court Judge had been appointed as Acting Chairperson of  National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with effect from April 25, 2021.He Succeeds Justice H.L. Dattu, whose tenure ended on December 2, 2020.

  • His appointment was authorized by President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The term of office of the NHRC Chairperson and members of the NHRC is for five years or till the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

Gist About Appointment:

i.NHRC Chairperson should be Chief Justice of India or a Judge of the Supreme Court.

ii.Section 2 Sections 3 and 4 of The Protection Of Human Rights (Amendment) Act (TPHRA) lay down the rules for appointment to the NHRC. The Chairperson and members of the NHRC are appointed by the President of India, on the recommendation of a committee consisting of:

  • The Prime Minister (Chairperson), The Home Minister, The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (Lower House), The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House), The Speaker of the Lok Sabha (Lower House), The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House).

Motilal Oswal PE Acquired a Minority stake in Fincare Small Finance Bank for ₹185 croreOn May 03, 2021, Motilal Oswal Private Equity (MOPE) has acquired a minority stake in Fincare Small Finance Bank (Fincare SFB) for $25 million (about ₹185 crores) through a secondary acquisition.

  • The key investor in Fincare SFB, True North Fund V LLP got a partial exit from the firm after the deal of MOPE with Fincare SFB.
  • The deal was done by one of the growth capital funds of MOPE called India Business Excellence Fund–III (it was managed and advised by MOPE).
  • Secondary Acquisition – It means the acquisition of existing shares of the company by the trust on the platform of a recognised stock exchange for cash consideration.

About Fincare SFB:
It is a Non-Banking Finance Company – Micro Finance Institution (NBFC-MFI), which was turned into a small finance bank in 2017. Before converting into a small finance bank, it was predominantly conducting business from two entities such as West India based Disha Microfin and South India-based Future Financial Services.

i.They are established as public limited companies in the private sector under the Companies Act, 2013 and governed by the provisions of RBI Act, 1934 and Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

World’s Largest Aeroplane built by Stratolaunch completes Test FlightThe World’s Largest Aeroplane codenamed ‘Roc’  successfully completed its 2nd Test Flight. The Aeroplane being built by Stratolaunch, an US based Aerospace Company was tested at Mojave Air and Space Port in California, US.

  • The Aeroplane has 2 flights under its belt and has a wingspan of 385 feet (117 feet).
  • It is designed to transport hypersonic vehicles and facilitate easy access to space. It is also capable of launching rockets from high altitude.
  • It is capable of carrying 550, 000-pound payload and can achieve a top speed of up to 190 mph (320 kph).
  • The 1st flight of the Aeroplane was done in April, 2019.

SpaceX Returns 4 Astronauts to Earth from ISS; in a Rare Night Splashdown off Florida coastOn May 02,2021, a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, Resilience carrying 4 astronauts returned from the International Space Station(ISS) and splashdown into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Panama City, Florida, USA after a six-and-a-half-hour flight.

  • Since the arrival of Apollo 8 in the Pacific Ocean on December 27, 1968, this was the U.S. crew’s first night time splashdown (in darkness).
  • The 4 Astronauts were: Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins and Shannon Walker (3 from America) and Soichi Noguchi (one from Japan)

Background:
i.On November 15, 2020, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center the 4 astronauts (Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker, Soichi Noguchi) were aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket under SpaceX Crew-1 mission for a 6-month science mission to ISS.
ii.Now they came back in the same capsule called Resilience after 167 days-mission, after their undocking now 7 people left in the ISS.
iii.The next astronaut launch of SpaceX for NASA was planned over in October 2021.

Pranati Nayak, 26-year-old Indian Gymnast from West Bengal, is set to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She has won the bronze in vault at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship 2019. She has qualified through the Asian quota.

  • She is the 2nd reserve after Elpitiya Badalge Dona Milka Geh of Sri Lanka for the Asian quota.
  • Both the Gymnasts will compete in the Olympics starting on 23rd July 2021.

ICC Banned Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Zoysa from Cricket for 6 years due to Corruption 

In April 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned SriLanka’s former cricket player and coach Nuwan Zoysa for 6 years from all forms of cricket after found breaching the ICCs anti-corruption code. On October 31, 2018, he was provisionally suspended by ICC.

Colonel Gulam Mohammad Khan, the 1982 Asian Games Gold Medallist Rider Passed Away The 1982 Asian Games gold medallist rider, Colonel Gulam Mohammad Khan died on May 01, 2021, in Pune, Maharashtra. Along with his team, he won the gold medal in Eventing at the 1982(9th) Asian Games in New Delhi.

  • He was honoured with an Arjuna Award in 1984.

In 1973, he joined the Indian Military Academy and he has been the captain of the Army Service Corps (ASC) team from 1980-1990 and during his captainship, his team won the National title 6 times and he also became 4 times individual National Champion in Eventing.

Veteran Gujarati and Hindi Film Actor Amit Mistry passed Away at the age of 47 after suffering a cardiac arrest .
i.Actor Amit Mistry worked in TV shows like Tenali Rama, Madam Sir and played roles in many films like Yamla Pagla Deewana, Shor In The City.
ii.He was also actively involved in the theatre circuit especially in Gujarati shows. He had also acted in Gujarati films.
iii.Besides acting, he was also a dialogue writer and director. He was most recently seen playing the role of the protagonist’s uncle in the web series Bandish Bandits.

Himachal Pradesh initiates ‘Parvat Dhara Yojana’ to Rejuvenate Water SourcesThe State Government of Himachal Pradesh has initiated ‘Parvat Dhara Yojana’ to revive, recharge aquifers (underground layer which contains water) and conserve natural resources of water in the state.
Objective – To enhance water level by retaining water for the maximum period.
i.It is set to be implemented in 10 districts of Himachal Pradesh.
ii.An outlay of INR 20 Crore has been set aside for implementation of the scheme.
iii.Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh will implement the scheme in forest areas.

i.The scheme was announced in the Himachal Pradesh State Budget for the FY 2020-21.
ii.The scheme will provide irrigation facilities in sloping fields, Forest Department.
