Highlights of PM Narendra Modi visit to Varanasi on July 7, 2022Varanasi-on-7th-July-2022i.On July 7, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi visited his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. There he inaugurated, and laid foundation stones of projects worth Rs 1800 crores.
ii.PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a three-day summit, ‘Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam’ at International Cooperation and Convention Centre, Rudraksh in Varanasi on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). Its culmination saw the adoption of the Varanasi Declaration on Higher Education.
iii.During the programme at Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Varanasi, the PM inaugurated projects worth over Rs 590 crore.

Ministry of Women and Child Development Issues Mission Vatsalya Guidelines

The Ministry of Women and Child Development(MoWCD), the nodal Ministry for ensuring the welfare of children, has issued guidelines for the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) “Mission Vatsalya”, formerly known as the Child Protection Services (CPS) Scheme, since 2009-10 for the welfare and rehabilitation of children.

  • The primary objective of Mission Vatsalya is to ensure that every child in India has a healthy and happy childhood.
  • Components under Mission Vatsalya include– Improve functioning of statutory bodies; Strengthen service delivery structures; Upscale institutional care/services; Encourage non-institutional community-based care; emergency outreach services; Training and capacity building.

Mission Vatsalya
i.Mission Vatsalya is a road map for achieving development and child protection priorities that are consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • With the motto “leave no child behind,” it emphasises Child rights, advocacy, and awareness while also strengthening the juvenile justice care and protection system.

ii.The provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012 and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 (JJ Act, 2015) provide the basic foundation for carrying out the mission.
iii. According to the stipulated cost-sharing ratio between the Centre and State/UT Governments, the Mission Vatsalya will be implemented as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), with a fund-sharing pattern in a 60:40 ratio.
iv.The State Governments/UT Administrations are required by the MoWCD to prepare their financial proposals and plans for the Mission Vatsalya Scheme for 2022–2023 based on the financial norms of Guidelines.

10th World Peace Forum organized in Beijing by Tsinghua University

The Tenth edition of the World Peace Forum 2022 was organised by Tsinghua University, in Beijing, China under the theme “Preserving International Stability: Commonality, Comprehensiveness and Cooperation”.

  • It was started in Beijing on 3rd July, 2022. India’s ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat was also a participant in the Forum.
  • The tenth edition of the forum comprises of topics including preservation of world peace, United Nations, European security order, and world order.

SBICAP Ventures Signs MoU with MEA For TDC Fund

SBICAP Ventures Ltd. (SVL), an Indian alternative asset manager, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to create the Trilateral Development Cooperation Fund (TDC Fund) for joint projects with global partners.

  • India would contribute approximately Rs. 175 crore (£17.5 million) to the Global Innovation Development Fund (GIP Fund) through the TDC Fund.

The Trilateral Development Cooperation (TDC) Fund, a platform recently launched by the MEA, will integrate the public and private sectors with state support for large-scale investments in the Indo-Pacific region

RBI released its 25th Financial Stability Report; Gross NPAs of banks fall to six-year low of 5.9% in March 2022

i.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the 25th issue of the Financial Stability Report (FSR) which reflects the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on risks to financial stability and the resilience of the financial system.
ii.As per the report, the global economy outlook is considerably uncertain because of the Russia-Ukraine war, front-loaded monetary policy normalization by central banks due to high inflation and multiple waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.
iii.Indian economy will remain on the path of recovery, though inflationary pressures, external spillovers and geopolitical risks require close monitoring.

i.The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
ii.The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Calcutta but was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.

i.CUB has decided to offer a wider range of innovative health insurance products to its customers after the regulator, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), permitted banks to have tie-ups with three standalone health insurance providers.
ii.CUB will have tie-up with eight insurers in total, three in life [Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), Tata AIA Life Insurance Co. Ltd, & Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Co. Ltd.]; three in health [Star Health & Allied Insurance Co. Ltd., Aditya Birla Health Insurance, & Care Health Insurance]; and two in general insurance [Shriram General and Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co. Ltd.]

IRDAI Sets up Task Forces to Resolve Issues of Insurers & Reinsurers

On 11th July 2022 Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) set up two task forces to resolve issues between insurers and reinsurers. The task force will submit the reports in 3 weeks.
Key Highlights:
First Panel It consists of 9 members to sort out the issues between non-life insurers and re-insurers.It headed by Bhargav Dasgupta, MD & CEO, ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

  • The panel gives suggestions on applicability of compliance requirements, and faster settlement and payment mechanism among the re-insurers and cross border reinsurers (CBRs).

Second Panel – The life insurance sector consists of 7 members to sort out the life insurance segment and re-insurers.It is headed by Naveen Tahilyani, MD & CEO, Tata AIA Life Insurance.

  • The team will analyse and recommend on stabilisation of reinsurance rates, capacity constraints with reinsurers, securitisation of mortality risk and financial reinsurance solutions.

Akasa Air gets an airline license from DGCA

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-owned Akasa Airlines received the air operator certificate (AOC or license) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and will begin flying by late July 2022.
i.The Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from India’s aviation regulator will make it the eighth domestic airline, not counting regional airlines.
ii.By the end of the FY2022-23, the airline will have 18 aircraft and thereafter, will add 12-14 aircraft every 12 months. This will make up its order of 72 aircraft to be delivered over a period of five years.
iii.Recently, Akasa Air, India’s newest and most dependable airline, welcomed the arrival of the first of its 72 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport

Nokia partners with IISc to set up networked robotics center of excellence

Nokia has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, Karnataka to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in order to facilitate research in the areas of networked robotics at IISc Bengaluru.
i.The research lab will promote interdisciplinary research involving robotics and advanced communication technologies in 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It will also develop use cases across industrial automation, agriculture and disaster management.
ii.The centre will facilitate engagement and cooperation between academia, start-ups and industry ecosystem partners to research and develop these use cases.

AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS    

Japanese Govt. Awards Ex-PM Shinzo Abe Country’s Highest Order Posthumously

The Government of Japan honored the former Prime Minister (PM) Shinzo Abe with the Collar of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, posthumously. He has been awarded the Junior First Rank of Court and Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum Posthumously.

  • It is Japan’s highest award.
  • Shinzo Abe became the fourth PM to receive the award under the post-war constitution.

Highlights:
i.Before Shinzo Abe, other former PMs including Shigeru Yoshida, Eisaku Sato and Yasuhiro Nakasone were also awarded with the same honor.
ii.On 8 July 2022, Shinzo Abe was gunned down while campaigning for the parliamentary election.
About the award:
i.It is the highest honor that a Japanese national can receive in his/her lifetime.
ii.It was introduced by Emperor Meiji of Japan in 1876.
iii.The Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum is the most prestigious award in Japan.
iv.The Grand Cordon of the Supreme Orders of the Chrysanthemum was established in 1876, and the Collar of the Supreme Orders of the Chrysanthemum in 1888.

  • Unlike its European countries, Japan has the right to award it posthumously.

Note: India awarded Shinzo Abe the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award – for ‘exceptional and distinguished service’ in the field of public affairs in 2021

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant Becomes India’s New G20 Sherpa

The former National Institute for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amitabh Kant is appointed as India’s new Sherpa for the Group of Twenty (G20) by replacing Piyush Goyal, a Union minister of commerce and Industry  .

  • India assumes the presidency from 1st December 2022 and the appointment of Amitabh Kant will also be effective from the same date and lasts till 30th November 2023.
  • Current president of G20 is Indonesia.

Key Highlights:
i.Amitabh Kant is a 1980-batch IAS officer (Kerala cadre), who had served as NITI Aayog CEO for 6 years and had previously served as a secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (currently DPIIT).
ii.Role of Amitabh Kant as sherpa – Amitabh Kant will now be the personal representative for Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi at the G20 summit and will also be responsible for pre-summit meetings and negotiations.

i.The G20 members represent more than 80 percent of world GDP, 75 percent of international trade and 60 percent of the world population.
ii.India has been a member of the G20 since 1999 and for the first time India will host the G20 leaders summit in 2023.
iii.Members of G20 – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union. Spain is also invited as a permanent guest.

Boris Johnson Resigned as UK Prime Minister United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister (PM), Boris Johnson  announced his resignation as Prime Minister of UK after he was abandoned by ministers and own party’s lawmakers.He also step down from Conservative Party leader.
Highlights:
i.He was forced to quit when 3 cabinet members and more than 40 ministers resigned on 5 July 2022 for  demanding his resignation. 

  • However he would serve as the PM until his successor was elected. 

ii.Boris Johnson as the PM had a very controversial tenure which include breaches of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown rules, a luxury renovation of his official residence.

Scientists at CERN Discovered Three “Exotic” Particles for First Time

Scientists of CERN or European Council for Nuclear Research discovered  three subatomic (exotic) particles with the help of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the first time using Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment.

  • The subatomic particles were seen as scientists began smashing protons at record energy levels in the 27 km long LHC machine in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The result is presented at the ICHEP 2022 in Italy.ICHEP is a series of international conferences organized by the C11 commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

Key points:
i.These particles are a new kind of “pentaquark” and the first-ever pair of “tetraquarks”, which includes a new type of tetraquark. The discovery solves the combining nature of  composite particles.
ii.When quarks  combine into four-quark and five-quark particles, they are known as tetraquarks and pentaquarks respectively.
What are Quarks?
Quarks are elementary particles and come in six flavours: up, down, charm, strange, top and bottom. They usually combine together in groups of twos and threes to form hadrons such as the protons and neutrons that make up atomic nuclei.

Asian U-20 & U-15 Wrestling Championships: Indian Bags 22 Medals in U-20, Indian freestyle wrestlers won the 2022 U-15 Asian Wrestling Championship

The 2022 U-15 and U-20 Asian Wrestling Championship held at the Khalifa Sports City arena in Manama,Bahrain under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Khalifa,a Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) First Deputy Chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) Chair and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) President.

India’s U-20 wrestlers bagged 22 medals including 4 gold, 9 silver and 9 bronze medals in the Asian U-20 Wrestling Championships held in Manama, Bahrain.

  • India ranked 2nd in the women’s wrestling, 2nd in men’s freestyle and 5th in the team ranking in Men’s Greco-Roman competition.
  • India won 2022 U-15 Asian Wrestling Championship in Freestyle Wrestling team ranking with 4 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal.Indian Under-15 Greco Roman Wrestling Team secured third place.

42 players from India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Taiwan and Uzbekistan were participated.

OBITUARY

Famous archaeologist Padmashree Enamul Haque Passed AwayRenowned archaeologist and Padma awardee Dr Enamul Haque passed away at the age of 85 years in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
About Enamul Haque:
i.Enamul Haque was born on 1 March 1937 in Bogra, Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh) British India.

  • He was a historian, art expert and former director general of Bangladesh National Museum.

ii.He joined Dhaka Museum (later Bangladesh National Museum) in 1962, where he served at the position of principal in 1965, director in 1969 and Director General during 1983–1991.
iii.He was also elected as the President of the International Council of Museums Asia-Pacific Organization for the period 1983–86.

Awards:

  • In 2020,he received Padma Shri,4th highest civilian award of the Republic of India in the field of archeology and museology for the work on Bengal’s Iconography and terracotta art.
  • Ekushey Padak (2016)- second highest civilian award in Bangladesh.
  • Swadhinata Padak (2020)- highest state award given by govt of Bangladesh.

British theatre Director Padma Shri Peter Brook passed away at 97

Peter Brook, the British-born director who perfected the art of staging powerful drama in bizarre venues, has passed away at the age of 97 in Paris, France. He was Born in London, United Kingdom in 1925.

  • Peter Brook is best known in India for his production of the French play “Le Mahabharata” (The Mahabharata), which was based on the Sanskrit epic, by Jean-Claude Carriere. The masterpiece was first staged in 1985 by Brook, who later translated it into English in 1987.
  • Peter Brook was conferred the Padma Shri in 2021 in the field of Art. He also won the Tony Awards for Best Direction for “Marat/Sade” in 1966 and 1971 for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Delhi LG Launches New Scheme for RWAs : Sah Bhagita
On 11th June 2022 Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena launched Sah-Bhagita, an incentive scheme for involving Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in optimal tax collection and waste management ecosystem.

  • Under Sah-Bhagita, the RWAs will receive 15 percent of the total collection of property tax for development works in their areas.

Delhi Govt Launches Chatbot to Answer Queries on E-Vehicles
The Delhi government has collaborated with whatsapp to launch whatsapp chatbot for customer management on queries regarding Electric Vehicles (e-vehicles).
