Rs. 4000cr allocated to State Governments under Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) component of PMKSY for FY 2020-21

i.The Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers’ Welfare (DAC&FW) has allocated Rs. 4000 cr to the state governments under PMKSY- PDMC which focuses on the effective use of water at farm level through Micro Irrigation technologies viz. Drip and Sprinkler irrigation systems.
ii.For Micro Irrigation Fund a corpus of Rs. 5000 crore has been created with NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).

This scheme was formulated on July 1, 2015 with an outlay of Rs. 50,000 crore in five years for extending the water coverage for irrigation under focusing “Har Khet ko pani” and improving water use efficiency aiming at  “More crop per drop”.

Diversion of forests for non-forestry projects: Govt. of India

i.11,467.83 hectares (114.68 square kilometre) forest lands were diverted for non-forestry projects throughout India.
ii.According to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change annual report 2019-20 the diversion was for 932 non-forestry projects under the Forest (Conservation )Act (FCA), 1980.

MHRD & Fit India collaborates to produce series of special films to promote 10 indigenous sports of India

On June 10, 2020 The Department of School Education and Literacy under Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD) has collaborated with Fit India(flagship programme of sports ministry) under the ”Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” initiative to produce a series of special films to promote 10 indigenous sports of India.
Aim of the series– To create awareness about indigenous games & the culture and heritage of their respective states.
Key Points
i.10 indigenous sports covered in the series– Kho-kho, Gatka, Kalaripayttu(very old sports), Mallakhamb, Thang-Ta, Sqay, Kabaddi, Roll Ball(recent sports which has gained a lot of popularity and is now played in at least 50 countries), Tug of War and Shooting Ball.
ii.The 10 episodes can be watched from June 8 to June 19(Monday to Friday) at 11am, on the Fit India YouTube page and MHRD digital platforms. Scholarships will be provided for the athletes of these games.
Purpose of the initiative– This initiative is an effort to reach out to young Indians and showcase the rich heritage of our indigenous games.

ADB forms 8-member panel to find solutions for speedy recovery of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has constituted an 8-member high-level panel of leading experts in economics, finance, and health, moderated by ADB Vice-President Ahmed M. Saeed, to help ministers, central bank governors, and other senior officials identify solutions for Southeast Asian economies to tap into to quickly recover after the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
i.It is to be noted that the ADB has allocated $20 billion financial response to its 68 members to help fight the pandemic and reboot its economy after months of lockdown.

India becomes 2nd nation to have contact-free ATM cash withdrawals; Empays Payment Systems partners with Mastercard

i.This cardless ATM (automated teller machine) will enable the users to withdraw their money just by scanning a (Quick Response) code on the mobile phone, using their banking app.
ii.It should be noted that Empays is authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as a national payment system.
iii.Earlier, AGS Transact Technologies Limited (AGSTTL) has developed ‘touchless’ (based on QR code) solution for cash withdrawals at ATMs.

Bharti International (Singapore) buys additional 6.3% stake in Robi Axiata from NTT Docomo

i.Bharti Airtel’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Bharti International (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.,(BISPL) directly and through its affiliate entities, has acquired an additional 6.3% stake in Robi Axiata Limited, Bangladesh from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) Do Communications over the Mobile network(Docomo) Inc and its group entities for an undisclosed sum.
ii.This all-cash deal will raise the BISPL’s stake in Robi Axiata to 31.3% from 25% & is approved by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

GRSE delivered 5th & final ship in FPV series, ICGS Kanaklata Barua; 4th FPV to be exported to Seychelles Coast Guard

i.The ship is 50m long, 7.5m wide and has a displacement of 308 tons with a maximum speed of 34knots (1 knot= 1.15miles per hour) enduring more than 1500 nautical miles.

For the first time in human history, French astronomers witness signs of planet birth

According to the study published in Astronomy & Astrophysics journal, a team of Scientists from the Observatoie de Paris, PSL (Paris Sciences et Lettres) University in France, have witnessed a birth of a new planet around a distant star called ‘AB Aurigae’ for the first time in human history by using photographs of the SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research) instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile.

i.The Court of Arbitration for Sport(CAS), informed that Former European high jump champion(2010) Alexander Shustov(35-year-old) of Russia  banned for 4 years for the use or attempted use of a banned substance or method(doping) & did not provide any further details.
ii.The Russian Athletics Federation stated that his ban was dated from June 5, and his results had been disqualified for a period from 2013 to 2017.

Pierre Nkurunziza, The President of Burundi passed away at 55

On 8th June 2020, The President of Republic of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza passed away at the age of 55 due to cardiac arrest at the hospital in Karuzi, eastern Burundi. On 9th June 2020, The Government of Burundi entered the seven day of mourning. He was born on 18th December 1964 in Ngozi Province.
Key Points:
i.He was a sports graduate and assistant lecturer at the University of Burundi and after the Civil War he became the leader of Forces for Defence of Democracy (FDD) in 2001.
ii.Pierre became the Minister of Interior in 2003 and in 2005 he was elected as the President at the age of 40 and he held the power for 15 years. He won 7 International awards  for his peace building efforts.
iii.His unconstitutional announcement to run for the third term led to national chaos.
iv.He announced he would step down in August and he was expected to receive a 540,000 USD(around Rs. 4 crore) in retirement pay, luxury villa and named “Supreme guide to patriotism”
vi.Evariste Ndayishimiye won the presidential election held on May 20 and to swear in as president in  August.

Olympic gymnast Kurt Bilteaux Thomas, First American to bag gold in the Gymnastic World Championship passed away at 64

On 5th June 2020, Kurt Bilteaux Thomas, the first American to win the gold medal in the Gymnastic World Championship 1978 in floor exercise that held in Strasbourg, France passed away at the age of 64 after suffering from a stroke on 24th May 2020 in Texas. He was born on 29th March 1956 in Miami, Florida.
Education:
He played in the high school gymnastics team and won a scholarship to Indiana State University, Terre Haute.
Awards:
i.He competed in the 1976 Olympic Games and couldn’t compete in the 1980 Moscow Olympic games since the american team boycotted the game due to soviet’s invasion of Afghanistan.
ii.He won 6(2 medal, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze) medals in 1979 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships that held in Fort Worth including 2 gold medals in floor exercise event and horizontal bar event.
iii.He couldn’t clear the US trials for the 1992 Olympic Games when he tried a comeback at the age of 36.
iv.He received the Sullivan Award in 1979 as the nation’s leading amateur athlete
v.In 2003 he was inducted in the Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
Career:
i.He worked as an ABC sports analyst in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
ii.He starred in the movie “Gymkata” as Jonathon Cabot in 1985.
iii.He owned and operated a gymnastics center with his wife Rebecca in Frisco, Texas.

UP govt. clears “Cow Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020” to prevent cow slaughter

i.The ordinance has amended the Uttar Pradesh cow slaughter act, 1955.
ii.This proposed law provides a maximum rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh.
iii.In case of illegal transportation of cows and other bovines, the driver, operator and the owner of the vehicle shall be charged under the new Act. This has amended the Section 5 of UP Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955.
