Earthquake of magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Nepal

  • A high-intensity earthquake of magnitude 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on 25 April 2015. The epicenter of the quake was 80km east of Pokhra near Kathmandu, Nepal at a shallow depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles).

  • Ban Ki Moon, the UN secretary-general has appointed, Ismail Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania has new special envoy to Yemen as pressure grows for peace talks while fighting rages in the Arab world’s poorest nation.

Japan to host FIFA Club World Cup in 2015 & 2016

  • Japan have been reappointed as hosts of the FIFA Club World Cup for the next two years, the sport’s world governing body announced.
  • FIFA said the annual tournament would be held in Japan in 2015 and 2016 with this year’s edition scheduled for December 10-20.

Indian-Origin Scientist Sangita Bhatia at MIT Wins USD 250,000 Heinz Award

  • An Indian-origin scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has developed artificial human microlivers for drug testing, has won a prestigious 250,000 dollars Heinz award for her work in tissue engineering and disease detection.
  • Sangeeta Bhatia at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been named the recipient of the 2015 Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment.
  • The Heinz Awards annually recognise individuals for their extraordinary contributions to arts and humanities; environment; human condition; public policy; and technology, the economy, and employment.

Radcliffe to receive London Marathon Lifetime Achievement Award

  • World record holder Paula Radcliffe will receive the inaugural John Disley London Marathon Lifetime Achievement Award after she completes the 2015 London Marathon on Sunday.

Marathi novelist Bhalchandra Nemade bags 50th Jnanpith Award

  • Modi awarded the 50th Jnanpith Award to eminent Marathi litterateur Bhalchandra Nemade whose several books, including Kosala and Hindu, have influenced Indian writing.
  • He was presented award comprising of 11 lakh rupees and a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Saraswati by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
