Bengali writer Suchitra Bhattacharya passes away

On 12th May 2015, famous bengali writer Suchithra Bhattacharya passed away in Kolkata,West Bengal, due to cardiac arrest. She was one of the  most powerful and popular novelist of Bengali literature.

Her writings mainly dealt with sufferings of women and also on social issues affecting the urban middle class population.

 

About Suchitra Bhattacharya

  • Suchitra was an Indian novelist, born on 10th January 1950 in Bhagalpur,Bihar.
  • She graduated from University of Calcutta and wrote short stories in the late 1970’s.
  • She then wrote novels in the 80’s.
  • Over the last two decades she had written number of short stories and 24 novels.
  • Some of her novels include Dahana{Charred}, Kachher Manush{Close To Me}, Aleek Sukh{Heavenly Happiness}, Alochhaya{Shadows of light}, Hermonter Pakhi{Bird of Autmn},Gabhir Ashukh{A Grave Illness} etc
  • She was awarded Jnanpith Award in 2000, National Award in 1996.
  • Other awards including Tarashankar Award 2000, Sharat Puroskhar 2002, Sahitya Setu Award etc
  • Her novels and short stories have been translated into other Indian languages like Tamil,Hindi,Malayalam,Oriya,Gujarati,Punjabi etc.
  • Some of her novels are adapted into movies also.
  • Writers like Bani Basu and Tilottama Majumder condoled the death of Suchitra.

Some information about Jnanpith Award

  • It is a award given for those who had contributed in theliterary fields.
  • Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship are the 2 most prestigious literary awards in India.
  • This award was instituted in the year 1961 and is presented by Bharatiya Jnanapith, a trust founded by Sahu Jain family.
  • First awardee was Mr G Sankara Kurup in 1965
