April 29: Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare

United Nations,observes April 29th every year as the day of remembrance of all the victims of Chemical Warfare. This day gives chance for all the people to remember and show their gratitude to the victims of chemical warfare. It also allows organisations and governments to pledge or confirm their commitment to the organisation for the Prohibition Of Chemical Weapons or OPCW.

This year’s Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare is more significant than ever as it marks the 100th anniversary of the first time chemical weapons were deployed on a large scale in battle.

• The main goal of this OPCW is to promote peace and security every where .
• It was on November 2005, UN decided to have a day in the memory of chemical warfare victims .
• The date April 29th was chosen because on this day only Chemical Weapons Convention came.
• Majority of countries had demolished the storage location of chemical weapons.
• Countries like Angola,Burma,Egypt,Israel, North korea are suspected in having chemical weapons.
• Syria is also in the list of country to be in possession of chemical weapon.

• It involves using toxic properties of chemical substances as weapons.
• NBC or nuclear,biological,chemical warfare are weapons of mass destruction.
• The use of living organisms like Anthrax is termed as biological warfare.
• The use of nonliving toxic products produced by living organisms is chemical warfare.
• The ancient use of chemical weapons were in the form of poisoned arrows and spheres.
• The most commonly used chemical warfare agent is mustard gas.
• Others like chlorine, phosgene, chloropicrin were also used sometimes.
