2nd edition of Global Bio-India 2021 held Virtually; Inaugurated by Dr Harsh Vardhan

2nd edition of Global Bio-India 2021

A 3-day long 2nd edition of Global Bio-India 2021 was held virtually from New Delhi on March 1-3, 2021 which was inaugurated by Union Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Ministry of Science & Technology. The theme of the event was ‘Transforming lives’ with the tagline ‘Biosciences to Bio-economy’.

  • Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance addressed the inaugural session as a special guest.

Organizers:

Global Bio-India 2021is being co-organized by the Department of Biotechnology(DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India along with Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) in partnership with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE) and Invest India.

Contribution to Indian Target:

  • The Biotechnology sector is recognized as one of the key drivers for India to achieve its USD 5 trillion targets by 2024.
  • Indian Biotechnology industry’s economy is valued at $70 billion in 2020 is expected to grow to USD 150 Bn by 2025.

Highlights of the event:

i.” National Biotech Strategy” unveiled by   Dr. Harsh Vardhan unveiled and also inaugurated the Virtual Exhibition of Global Bio-India during the event. The virtual Exhibition will continue till March 30, 2021.

ii. Global Bio-India Startup Conclave, 2021 was organized and addressed by Union Minister Piyush Vedprakash Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry. He called for extending support to the start-ups to implement their ideas at the ground level without any fear of failure

  • Startup India initiative was already launched by the Government January 2016 for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Project development cell of DBT was launched during the conclave, which will help significant targeted support. 5 new technologies were also launched.

iii.Indian Bio-economy Report (IBER) by ABLE, and Biotech Investment Potential for Indian States Report were released by IFC Dr. Harsh Vardhan released.

iv.Valedictory and Award Session of Global Bio India-2021 was virtually addressed by Vice President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu.

India’s Ranks:

  • India ranks amongst the top 12 biotech destinations in the world, with approximately 3% share in the global biotechnology industry.
  • US is the global leader in biotechnology with market size of over USD 200 bn with an expected growth at a CAGR of 7.4% between 2020-2026.
  • India is the 3rd largest start up ecosystem in the world, India is home to more than 60,000 startups.

i.Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)- Established in 1895 and named as CII in 1992.

ii.Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE)- It is a not-for-profit pan-India forum & a founding member of the International Council of Biotechnology Association (ICBA).

iii.Invest India– Set up in 2009, it is the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency of India under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Why is Global Bio-India 2021 being organized?

It is an international platform which combines biotechnology stakeholders, including international bodies, regulatory bodies, Central and State Ministries, SMEs (Small & Medium Enterprises), large industries, bioclusters, research institutes, investors, and the startup ecosystem. Therefore it is organized to showcase opportunities of the India’s biotechnology sector at national level and to the global community.

  • The event saw the participation of over 6,000 delegates from over 50 countries and hosted around 24 knowledge sessions across different segments.

i.DBT is implementing the Ind-CEPI Mission titled ‘India Centric Epidemic Preparedness through Rapid Vaccine Development: Supporting Indian Vaccine Development Aligned with the Global Initiative of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)’.

ii.Government of India has allocated Rs.900 crore to the Department of Biotechnology(DBT) for research and development of COVID-19 vaccines under Mission COVID Suraksha.
